Lafia, April 16, 2017 (NAN) The Nasarawa State Chapter of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has called on its members to avoid violating traffic rules, especially during the Easter celebration.
Salihu Adamu, state Chairman of NURTW, made the call in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lafia.
He urged the drivers to play their part in order to reduce the rate of accidents in the state during the period.
The chairman said the union had set machinery in motion to check overloading, speeding beyond limits and dangerous overtaking by commercial drivers.
Adamu warned that those in the habit of violating traffic rules would face serious disciplinary action if caught.
He also urged commercial drivers to desist from loading outside the approved motor parks across the state.
“Any commercial driver caught operating in illegal motor parks would be disciplined in accordance with the laws governing the operations of the union.
“The union will work round the clock towards ensuring that commercial drivers operate in only approved motor parks.
“We will address the problem of proliferation of unapproved motor parks and ensure drivers observe traffic rules in order to reduce the rate of accidents in the state,” he said.
Adamu said the union had reduced its membership registration to N500 and decided to give financial support to any member facing difficulties.
“All these measures are aimed at improving the welfare of our members and taking the youths off the street by offering them employment opportunity,” he said.
The chairman commended Gov. Umaru Al-Makura for supporting the union and appealed that the state government should fast track the provision of more motor parks for the union.
He said that the union was ready to work with the Federal Road Safety Commission and other security agencies to reduce the rate of accidents in the state. (NAN)
