Ibadan, May 15, 2018 (NAN) The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), University of Ibadan, Prof. Adeyinka Aderinto, on Tuesday urged graduates of Nigerian universities to return to their schools and assist in the delivery of quality education.
Aderinto also called on alumni associations to assist in meeting the infrastructure and funding needs of their alma mata.
The don made the call when the 1988 set of the Department of Sociology of the university presented the sum of N500,000 to the 54-year old department for upgrading the postgraduate classroom.
The gesture was part of activities lined up to mark the 30th anniversary of their graduation.
According to Aderinto, world class universities attained their present status owing largely to the contributions of their alumni to infrastructural development, endowment and funding.
“The likes of Havard, Yale and London School Economics did not get to their present world class positions by joke.
“They benefit largely from the support of their alumni. We cannot sit back and watch our institutions go into state of disrepair without ploughing back to where we were made,” he said.
The Head of Department of Sociology, Prof. Ifeanyi Onyeonoru, while thanking the 1988 set for its support to the department, promised that the fund would be used judiciously to uplift the postgraduate classroom.
Onyeonoru, who wondered why Nigerians give money to worship houses and not to public institutions, called for a change of attitude.
A professor of Development studies, Olanrewaju Olutayo, urged those who have been insensitive to the needs of their former schools to wake up and give back to their alma mata to enrich the standard of education. (NAN)
