Children

Abuja, July 22, 2017 (NAN) Mrs Salimat Sani, the Director of Prime Scholars’ Schools, Karu and Kubwa in the FCT on Saturday warned parents to desist from hurrying their children through school.
Sani said this in her opening remarks at the 14th graduation and prize giving day of the school in Abuja.
She said that most parents hurry their children through school and at the end of secondary education; they are still under aged to face life in the tertiary institute.
“Pushing children through stages of their primary, secondary years portends danger because they come out not mature enough to face life in the universities.
“ Some of these children are barely 14 or 16 and they go to the universities unequipped and are together with those far their age that can easily influence them negatively.
“You burden these children with too many things beyond their age, from school to home lesson, to extra lesson and do not allow their time to grow at their pace.
“I therefore urged parents to be patient, show love and care to your children and allow them to grow naturally,“ she said.
Mr Adamu Baba, the Head of Department (HOD), State Secondary Schools Board, Abuja said that parents should know that teachers follow the national curriculum.
“The national curriculum is aimed at meeting the demands of the society and the country, and it stipulates that a child starts primary school at six years and secondary at 12.
“The aim of education is not only to read and write but to see that every educated child fits in confidently and positively into the society.
“The aim is to build in every child self esteem and stability, mental psychology and balance which allows a child to stand on his own confidently without falling back on the parents,” he said.
Baba lamented that it was not right if at the age of 30 or even 35, a child was still dependent on parents while they were supposed to be on there own.
He therefore called on parents to allow their children pass through school `systemically` that means 6, 3, 3 and at the right age. (NAN)
