Kano, June 6, 2017 (NAN) The Department for International Development (DFID) on Tuesday inaugurated the training of over 2, 400 youths on various skills in Kano.
The team leader of the programme, Mr Erling Petersen said that the programme tagged: “MAFITA” was a six-year DFID-funded programme implemented by Adam Smith International.
He said that the programme would focus on three states of Kaduna, Kano and Katsina state.
“Mafita will work with stakeholders to improve access to quality training and links to employment for youths and women while supporting market systems to provide them with sustainable income generation opportunities,” he said.
Petersen said that northern Nigeria was affected by high rate of youth unemployment and lack of economic opportunities.
“MAFITA seeks to facilitate 68,000 marginalised young people aged between 15 and 24 years to find fulltime employment or be self-employed by 2021.
“Marginalised groups, including youths, Almajirai, adolescent girls, people with disabilities and early school leavers are particularly affected and many lack marketable skills,” he said.
He said that the youths would be trained on tailoring, arts, crafts, auto-mechanic, electrical work, building and welding.
Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje said that the state government was committed to youth empowerment, adding that it would establish two vocational centers in the state.
Ganduje, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman Alhaji commended the development partners for promoting economic activities in the state. (NAN)
