Seedlings

Dutse, Feb. 4, 2017 (NAN) The National Programme of Action against Desertification (NPAD) is to raise and distribute 500,000 seedlings in Shabarun-Jeke village, in Suletankarkar Local Government Area of Jigawa.
The Information Officer in charge of the council, Alhaji Daudu Sulaiman, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Dutse.
Sulaiman said that the National Coordinator of the programme, Mr Fameso Thomas, stated this when he led officials of the NPAD on a courtesy visit to the Caretaker Committee of the local council, Alhaji Haladu Bulama.
He stated that Thomas said that the seedlings would be distributed to farmers and other individuals to plant on their farms and houses to check desertification.
The spokesperson added that the agency said that it would also drill solar powered boreholes in the area to enhance access to safe drinking water.
According to him, NPAD would also establish three kilometer shelter belt, as well as five hectares of orchard.
Sulaiman further quoted the coordinator as saying that the projects were jointly sponsored by the European Union (EU) and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).
Responding, the council boss commended NPAD, AU and FAO for the gesture.
The chairman later led the team to the benefiting community to asses sites for execution of the projects. (NAN)
