Oyo (Oyo State) May 16, 2017 (NAN) For a result-oriented and effective administration, university administrators should deploy emotional intelligence in the management of the tertiary institutions, Dr Kayode Ogunleye, the Registrar, Bowen University, Iwo in Osun has said.

He said emotional information should be used to guide the thinking and behaviour of personnel in managing them for the attainment of corporate goals.

Ogunleye spoke late on Tuesday at the 2nd Registry Lecture hosted by Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, which was attended by registrars and other administrators from universities across the country.

“University administrators should apply emotional intelligence to affect lives positively in carrying out their duties.

“With adequate intellectual ability and technical know-how, emotional intelligence will help administrators to focus on personal qualities such as initiative ability, empathy, adaptability and persuasiveness,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Wikipedia states : Emotional intelligence (EI) is the capability of individuals to recognize their own and other people’s emotions, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one’s goal(s).

The theme of the lecture is “Emotional Intelligence: A Prerequisite for Effective University Administration.”

Ogunleye, who was the guest lecturer, said university administrators should help students to develop it as employers now  look beyond academic performance in engaging people.

“They look at other issues such as talent, tenacity, morality, empathy and ability to collaborate and work with others; all these are components of emotional intelligence.”

The administrator  listed types of emotional intelligence as self-awareness competencies, self-regulation competencies, motivation and the sue of empathy.

According to him, although environment sometimes influences ones emotion, but it is advisable that we encourage and prepare ourselves by deploying emotional intelligence to bring the best out of situations.

Prof. Dapo Asaju, the Vice-Chancellor of the university and chairman of the occasion, said  the concept of a university was  holistic, adding that every aspect of the university system was central to the attainment of its objectives.

“Academics also have administrative skills because administration is an important discipline and that is why administrative skills are required before academics are appointed professors.

“Administrators are very important our in the university system; without them salaries, transcripts and examinations will not be processed smoothly and promptly,’’ he said.

Asaju urged participants to take advantage of the subject so as to function effectively anywhere in the world particularly in a university system.

Earlier in her remarks, Mrs Adenike Fatogun, the Registrar of the host university, noted that some administrators were more interested in earning promotion than personal development.

She said:“Whatever skills you develop in yourself are yours for life and you can also determine how much of it you want to use for the system.

“People come into university administration for various reasons and it behoves us to put in our best, enjoy the work, impact lives and derive a lot of satisfaction and feeling of success in the process.”

Fatogun stressed that it was the duty of administrators who were involved in policy formulation and implementation to ensure that universities thrive and fulfill their mandates.

“Let us take more interest and pleasure in our work of moulding lives. We must take particular interest in our students, their well-being and successes as we are ` in locus parentis’ to them.’’ (NAN)
