Asaba, Dec. 5, 2016 (NAN) Delta Commissioner for Bureau of Special Duties, Mr Chika Ossai says the state lost property worth N7.8 billion to fire outbreaks across the state from May 2015 till date.
Ossai stated this at a ministerial press briefing organised by the state Ministry of Information on Monday in Asaba.
He said that apart from the property that were lost to fire outbreaks in different parts of the state, 18 persons were also evacuated dead.
Ossai said that during the period, the ministry was able to save property worth N220 billion due to its timely intervention of personnel of the ministry.
“My ministry was able to attend to 548 fire calls, six rescued calls, 92 false calls, and was also able to rescue 155 persons alive.
“In addition, the fire service responds to all manner of distress calls such as call resulting from the event of road accidents, someone falling into a pit and other forms of mishaps demanding the rescue of lives and property,’’ he added.
While stressing that the aim and objectives of the ministry included protecting and safeguarding lives and property from natural and man-made disaster and hazards, Ossai noted that the ministry was able to render assistance to disaster victims.
“The ministry inspected more than 100 cases of fire disasters, 50 cases of rainstorm and more than 2,000 cases of flood disaster in the state in 2015 till date,’’ he said.
Ossai further disclosed that the ministry was able to generate N19 million as revenue during the period.
He said that the revenue was generated through the issuance and renewal of the fire safety certificates to industries and business premises. (NAN)
