Surgery
By Mustapha Sumaila
Abuja, Oct. 12, 2017 (NAN) A childless couple seeking solution to the challenge, had their situation compounded due to a defective surgery on the woman, a petition has stated.
The petition was submitted to Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) through a law firm, The Vicegerent Legal Consult.
The law firm is acting on behalf of the couple, Aondovihi and Victoria Isaac, who got married in 2012.
An acknowledged copy of petition was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.
Isaac stated that following a surgery by Dr Mpson Warigon, the Chief Medical Director of Niquad Clinic, located on Kajah Road, Orozo in Abuja, his wife, Victoria, could no longer defecate.
Isaac stated that the CMD had diagnosed that his wife had `Left Mucinous Ovarian Cyst’ which needed to be removed through surgery and asked him to pay N45,000 for the operation.
According to him, days after the surgery performed on Aug. 7, 2017, his wife could not defecate while on admission in the hospital and after they returned home.
“I was surprised at the development; if not the issue of conception that took us to the clinic, my wife was in sound health.
“The doctor did not give us any consent form to fill or tell us the implication of the surgery he intended to do.
“And two days after my wife was discharged, she could still not defecate and I quickly informed the CMD of my wife’s deteriorating health condition and he asked me to return her to the hospital, which I did immediately.
“The CMD gave her some drugs and urged her to be taking orange and banana and then asked me to take her back home.
“We carried out the doctor’s instruction and advice diligently. However, she vomited the banana I gave her.
“After administering one of the drugs, Moko (R) liquid paraffin 200ml which the doctor had given her, she became weaker and started gasping for breath.’’
Isaac said that he quickly informed the CMD of the development and he directed him to return his wife to the clinic.
According to him, another doctor at the same clinic who attended to her, gave her some injections and drips and he was asked to pay additional N3,000.
He said that the CMD later gave them a referral letter to any government-owned hospital as there was no improvement in his wife’s condition.
“After waiting for so long, the CMD finally gave us the referral letter to either go to Asokoro, Wuse or Maitama General Hospital.
“We first went to Asokoro and they referred us to Maitama General Hospital because there was no bed space.
“My wife was admitted at Emergency Ward; X-Ray and scan were taken instantly and on Aug. 14, the doctor attending to my wife informed me that another surgery would be performed and asked us to pay N40,000 for the procedure.
“During the surgery, I was invited to the theatre to see the error committed in the previous surgery by Niquad Clinic’s CMD.
“And I was shocked to see my wife’s small intestine cut and tied in different places with either rope or thread and I was sad and disappointed.
“Niquad Clinic caused my wife a lot of harm, pains, financial burden and sorrow.”
He said that a second surgery was done at Maitama General Hospital a week later, when it was observed that water and faeces were gushing out from the surgery point.
“The doctor had to conduct a second surgery which was successful and since then, my wife is improving.
“My lawyer came into the hospital in Maitama and was shown the referral letter where Niquad Clinic’s CMD admitted to have committed some errors in the earlier surgery.’’
Isaac said he had advised his counsel, Mr Hameed Ajibola, to help him seek redress.
When contacted to react to the development, an official at MDCN told NAN that the council does not entertain any third party in a case between a patient and a doctor.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, declined to comment on whether or not the council received the petition.
Meanwhile, the CMD, who allegedly performed the defective surgery, did not answer phone calls or respond to Short Message Service (SMS) sent to his phone.
NAN correspondent who visited Niquad Clinic in Orozo, near Karshi, reports that a member of staff of the clinic, said the CMD was sick and on admission in the hospital.
The worker claimed to be a family member of the doctor.
She said she was aware of the incident and efforts were being made to resolve the matter amicably with the patient and her family. (NAN)
