Dealer docked over alleged theft of friend’s bags of rice

Lagos, Jan. 29, 2018 (NAN) A Lagos-based rice dealer, Joseph Ogu, who allegedly stole 54 bags of rice belonging to his friend, was on Monday brought before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court.
Ogu, 36, who is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft, pleaded not guilty to the offences.
Police prosecutor, Uche Simeon, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Dec. 29, 2017 at 5a.m.
Simeon said that the rice, worth N800,000, was kept in Ogu’s custody at 33, Alao Osumba St., Mazamaza, Lagos.
He said that the accused claimed that his shop was burgled whereas his own (Ogu’s) bags of rice that were kept inside the same shop were intact and untouched.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015
Section 287 carries three years imprisonment while Section 411 prescribes two years imprisonment for offenders.
The Magistrate, A. A. Adesanya, granted the accused bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He said the sureties must be relatives of the accused and adjourned the case until March 12 for mention. (NAN)
