Abuja, Feb. 12, 2017 (NAN) Nigeria’s Rachael Danjuma on Sunday in Abuja emerged winner of the 2017 IBB Ladies Open Amateur Golf Championship, in spite of a disappointing final round play.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 160 lady golfers took part in this year’s tournament which was the event’s 19th edition.
The players who took part in the four-day amateur golf tournament which teed-off on Thursday were from four countries, namely Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
Danjuma who had 165 gross after the second round had taken a 10-shot lead ahead of the defending champion, Amina Wilfred, who had a gross of 175.
Ghanaian Jessica Tei with 178 gross was close on Wilfred’s heels in third place.
But the final round saw Danjuma putting up an unimpressive performance, even as she still held her nerves to clinch victory at the end.
Danjuma, who scored 83 gross (75 nett) and 82 gross (74 nett) in the first and second rounds respectively, managed a disappointing 91 gross on the final day.
She emerged the winner after amassing a total of 256 gross, beating Tei by 11 shots after the Ghanaian moved past Wilfred.
Tei finished second with a total of 267 gross, with Wilfred in third spot after finishing on the same gross with Tei (267) but losing after a count back.
NAN reports that home player Wilfred had finished second on Day Two but fired a gross of 86, 89, 92 to tie on total number of gross with Tei who shot 89, 89, 89.(NAN)
