Lagos, Jan. 23, 2018 (NAN) Mr Isioma Williams,  the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Drumsview Concept, on Tuesday appealed to the Federal Government to establish facilities in museums across the country for the proper preservation of indigenous musical instruments.

Williams told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that through such preservation, the musical instruments would not go into extinction and enhance the development of our indigenous culture.

He listed some of the instruments peculiar to the different ethnic groups to include: “Ekpete’’, “Ogene’’, “Ekwu’’- slit drum, “Igba oja’’, “Udu’’, “Ichaka’’, “Ikoro’’ and , “Okike’’.

Others are: “Odu Mkpalo’’, “Ubo’’,“ Goje’’, “Kalengu’’, “Gangan’’, “Bata’’, Maracas, “Kakaki’’, “Alghata’’, “Timpani’’, “Agogo’’, “Aashiko’’ and  “Sakara’’.

He said that some of these instruments were used by our forefathers during installation of new traditional rulers, child christening, conferment of traditional tittles on individuals or for other important cultural activities.

He said that he had observed that most of the indigenous musical instruments were rarely used by Nigerian musicians but had gone ahead promoting foreign musical instruments.

“Jembe is an instrument from Senegal used by our artistes here, while most of our neighboring musicians use our Bata talking drums.”

He suggested that the government should attach more relevance to the music and dance industry by preserving the indigenous musical instruments.

He said that the South Koreans had a cultural village and museums specifically meant for the preservation of their musical instruments.

Nigeria could tap from this idea to elongate the nation’s culture, he said.

He said such preservation was very important because music videos, audios and researched documentaries could also be kept for students’ future benefits.

He said this would promote and protect our culture because these instruments are part of our culture, which we must guide jealously.

Williams advised indigenous musicians to ensure utmost use of the nation’s musical instruments so as to promote our culture. (NAN)
