Scanners
By Mohammed Mamman
Damaturu, Feb. 3, 2017 (NAN) A cross section of Damaturu residents in Yobe have appealed to the Federal Government to install security scanners on federal highways to detect prohibited goods transported across the country.
Some of the residents who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Damaturu, however, lauded the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for its recent discovery of arms illegally imported into the country.
The new leadership of the service they said, had done the country proud “by this singular act of patriotism”.
Malam Sule Ali, a civil servant, said the installation of scanners on highways would check banned items from entering the country, especially those that were smuggled in.
Another resident, Alhaji Musa Mohammed, a retired civil servant, also commended the service, saying, “there is wisdom in the ban on importation of rice and vehicles through land borders”.
This, he said, would prevent smuggling of prohibited items into the country.
“The steps taken by government are in order, in view of the proliferation of small weapons in the sub-region,” he said.
He added that the installation of scanners on federal highways across the country, would further ensure inspection of vehicles.
Mrs Maimuna Kabir, a mother of four, said the experience of the protracted insurgency in the North-East called for extra measures to beef up security.
“One cannot explain how insurgents got supplies of arms and ammunition and there were no proper means of checking contents of over-loaded trucks and vehicles traveling across the country.
She said installing scanners on the roads would check the activities of smugglers, and that the security agents who compromised should face the wrath of the law. (NAN)
