Lagos, Feb.23, 2017 (NAN)Mr Louis Eriomala, Lagos Director, National Institute for Cultural Orientation has urged the Federal Government to engage the services of trained tour guides who were familiar with their environment of operation.
Eriomala told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos that a tour guide who had lived in a locality for years was more competent than one that would have to undergo orientation about the locality.
He said engaging appropriate guides would boost tourism and remove any doubt about the competence of guides in selling the image of the country.
According to him, the role of a tour guide is very important in the development of the tourism business as a tourist is endeared to a particular site, based on the information given to him by the tour guide.
” Tour guides should have very deep knowledge of the history of the places; they should also be very passionate about their job.
” The Nigerian government can begin to train tour guides with good knowledge of the history of notable historical sites and places.
” They should be able to tell the story of a place with utmost accuracy and passion,” he said.
Eriomala also urged the Federal Government to rehabilitate roads leading to most tourist sites in the country.
He said that plying dilapidated roads to visit any site of interest could discourage tourists from frequenting such places.(NAN)
