Obubra (Cross River), Feb. 23, 2017 (NAN) A Primary School Nanny, who, through sheer determination, obtained Grade II certificate in her place of work, has been upgraded to a classroom teacher.
The Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) on Thursday rewarded Mrs Bassey Osok, a nanny with the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria Primary School in Obubra Local Government Area.
Dr Stephen Odey, Chairman of the board, who announced Osok’s promotion, said this followed her obtaining Grade II Certificate while serving the school.
Odey commended her for her hard work and commitment in the face of current economic realities.
“We have to encourage her to boost the morale of others who are in the same position, to do the same; we will continue to reward excellence and hard work,’’ he said.
He said the ongoing personnel verification, biometrics/image capturing and promotion interview of teachers and staff of the Local Government Education Authorities, had exposed a lot of ills in the system.
According to the SUBEB chairman, all hands must be on deck to drive home the process of transforming the basic education sector in the state.
He condemned the art of certificate forgery, staff impersonation and abandonment of duties, among others, noticed during the exercise.
“It is time we clean the system. The basic education sector should not be a place where people are noted for forgery.
“We must put all hands on deck to clean up the system and fight the corruption in the basic education sector,” Odey said.
Responding, Osok thanked SUBEB for the promotion and promised to do her best in the state’s service.
“I feel very happy and I promise that I will not let SUBEB down, ‘’ she pledged.
Meanwhile, Mrs Eyam Omom, Executive Secretary, Obubra Local Government Education Authority, has commended SUBEB for embarking on the verification of staff, saying the exercise would correct the ills in the education system.
She described the board’s takeover of payment of teachers’ salaries as a dream come true, saying that it would address the problem of truancy caused by irregularities in salary payment.
NAN reports that the verification/promotion exercise is currently on-going in the Central Senatorial district, the last zone to be addressed. (NAN)
