Bwari (FCT), May 23, 2017 (NAN) Mr Charles Awodeh, a Tudun-Fulani Community Leader in Bwari, FCT, has called on Bwari Area Council to invest in sports and education in order to engage the youth and reduce crime.

Awodeh gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bwari  on Tuesday.

He said unhealthy habits such as drug addiction and other vices could be reduced to a minimum if sport facilities would be provided in communities to engage the youth.

“Sports and education will go a long way to curb social vices in our society.

“If the chairman can take up sports and education; an idle mind is the devil’s workshop, but when people are engaged, especially youths, sport is a money spinning venture that can generate GDP (Gross Domestic Product) for Nigeria, more than oil.

“Just empower the youth and I tell you the truth, most of these social vices will be curbed, because if these kids have nothing to do, they will go to different corners and start smoking (all sort of substances).

“If the chairman can do this, he would have affected the lives of the people positively, which would go a long way toward helping us to curb crime.”

He said sports could also be used to encourage young people to live healthy lifestyles.

According to him, the real value of sports in any community is the positive effect it has on education.

“An investment in sports will have positive effect on classroom behaviour, especially among the truants, outside the school environment,” Awodeh said.  (NAN)
