Courts grants tricycle operator N100,000 bail for alleged theft

Lagos, Feb. 9, 2017 (NAN) An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. on Thursday admitted a 32-year-old man, Bamidele Suleiman, to bail in the sum of N100,000 for allegedly absconding with a tricycle valued N730,000
Suleiman, who lives close to Aton Police Station in Ogun, bought the tricycle through a hire purchase agreement and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Miss. A.R. Onilogbo, ordered the accused to produce two sureties in like sum.
Onilogbo said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
She said that the office and address of the sureties must be verified, and adjourned the case till Feb. 15 for mention.
The Prosecutor, Cpl. Ishola Samuel, told the court that the accused committed the offence at Oniwaya Road in Agege Area of Lagos in November 2015.
Ishola said the accused stole a tricycle, property of the complainant, Chukwuemeka Chinedu, after he had entered into an agreement to buy the tricycle on hire purchase.
“The complainant gave the accused the tricycle on hire purchase for N730,000 and he agreed, he paid N456,500 and he disappeared with the tricycle .”
He did not show up to tell the complainant what happened to the tricycle and why he stopped the payment.
Two years later, the complainant saw him passing by and the accused told him that the tricycle knocked engine and he was immediately apprehended.
The offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
