Court slams N500, 000 bail on driver for alleged attempt to sell employer;s car

Abuja, Sept. 21, 2016 (NAN) A Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday admitted a 34-year-old driver, Gideon Habu, to bail in the sum of N500, 000 for alleged criminal breach of trust.

The Area Court judge, Alhaji Mohammed Ado, ordered the defendant to produce a surety in the like sum.

Ado said that the surety must be a civil servant on grade level eight and above, and adjourned the case till Nov. 14 for hearing.

Habu of Malali, Kaduna State, was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust by servant and theft.

The Prosecutor, Judith Obatomi, told the court that Mfon Udoh of Idris Crescent, Jabi, Abuja, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, on Aug. 5.

She said that the complainant reported that on July 7, she entrusted the defendant who is her personal driver and  lives in her boys quarters with her car spare key and she traveled abroad.

Obatomi said when the complainant returned on Aug. 3. and discovered that her drivers allegedly stole her red Kia Optima car valued N4.5 million.

During police investigation the car was recovered behind NEPA Quarters, Kaduna State, where he was trying to sell it.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Obatomi said that the offence contravened sections 312 and 289 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
