Mararaba (Nasarawa State), April 17, 2018 (NAN) A Mararaba Upper Area Court in Nasarawa State, on Tuesday, sentenced a 21-year-old businessman, Abdul Umar, to 18 months in prison for housebreaking and theft.
The judge, Ibrahim Shekarau, said he jailed Umar based on evidence before the court and his guilty plea.
He added that “Abdul Umar is hereby sentenced to six months in prison or pay N6,000 fine for the offence of housebreaking.
“For the offence of theft, Umar is sentenced to 12 months in prison or pay N8,000 fine.”
Shekarau also ordered the convict to pay N15,000 to the nominal complainant as cost of prosecuting the case.
Umar, who resides at New Orange Market, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, was arraigned on two-count charge bordering on housebreaking and theft.
The defendant admitted committing the offences and pleaded for mercy.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Hamen Donald, told the court that the matter was reported by Ali Liman of Army Headquarters, Garki, Abuja, at the `A’ Police Division, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, on March 31.
He said the defendant on the same date broke into Donald’s house through the ceiling and stole items worth N30,000, before he was arrested in possession of them.
Donald said some of the stolen items were one big sledge iron hammer, one coiled chisel and some pieces of iron rods.
According to him, the offences are contrary to and punishable under sections 287 and 346 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
