Court remands juvenile in correctional home for break-in, stealing TV

Minna, March 2, 2018 (NAN) A Minna Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded a juvenile (name withheld) in Children’s Remand Home for allegedly breaking into a home and stealing a television set.

The juvenile along with Hassan Abdullahi, are facing a three-count charge of housebreaking, theft and receiving stolen property.

While the juvenile pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, the second accused pleaded innocence of the offence.

Police Prosecutor Husseini Paiko told the court that the complainant, Hadiza Aliyu of Maitumbi reported the incident at the police station on Feb. 20.

Paiko alleged that the accused had broken into the complainant’s apartment when she had gone to work and made away with her LG TV valued at N60, 000.

He told the court that during police investigation, the juvenile admitted stealing the TV which he sold to the second accused and another suspect, Bilya, now at large, at the rate of N2,000.

The offences contravened Sections 288, 316 and 346 of the Penal Code.

The prosecutor asked for an adjournment to enable the police properly present its case against the second accused since has has pleaded not guilty.

In her ruling, Magistrate Fati Auna convicted the juvenile, but reserved sentence until March 5 to allow his father to be present in court.

Auna, however, granted the second accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 and a surety in like sum.

She said one of the sureties must either be his father, brother or a close relation and adjourned the case until March 22. (NAN)
