Abuja, April 20, 2017 (NAN) A Gudu Upper Area Court , Abuja, on Thursday sentenced 24-year-old Issac Michael to three weeks imprisonment for stealing four pieces of window glasses.
Michael, a scavenger of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.
He begged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying, “I am just trying to survive’’.
The judge, Mr Umar Kagarko, in sentencing Michael, however, gave him an option of fine of N5, 000.
Kagarko said he gave the convict a light punishment due to his plea for leniency and promise not to repeat the act.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Mr Fidelis Ogbobe, had told the court that one Alhaji Ibrahim Angwa of Dei-Dei reported the case at Wuye Police Station on April 15.
Ogbobe said that the convict was spotted by the informant when he was trying to sell the four pieces of window glasses at Dei-Dei Building Materials Market.
“He was immediately apprehended by the police.
“During police investigation, he could not give a satisfactory explanation of the property he was trying to sell,’’ Ogbobe said.
He also told the court that the convict admitted to have committed the crime.
The offence is contrary to Section 96 and 240 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
