Court jails 2 men for possession of cannabis sativa

Abuja March 23, 2017 (NAN) A Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Thursday sentenced one Luwunu Salihu, 20, and Mohammed Usman, 21, to two months imprisonment each ,for being in possession of dried leaves, suspected to be cannabis sativa (Indian hemp).

The judge, Alhaji Ahmed Ado, however, gave them an option of N2,000 fine each and warned them to desist from committing crimes.
The convicts of no fixed addresses, had prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, and promised to be of good behaviour.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Zannah Dalhatu, told the court that a team of police patrol, led by Insp. Emakoji Agenyi, attached to Gwarimpa Police Station, on March 17, arrested and took the convicts to the station.

Dalhatu said that the convicts on the said date were in possession of wrapped dried leaves, suspected to be cannabis sativa.

He said that during police investigation, they could not satisfactorily answer why they were in possession of such leaves.

The prosecutor said that the offence is punishable under Section 319 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
