Court grants N5m bail to 4 suspects over alleged theft of N28m goods

Lagos, Feb. 10, 2017 (NAN) An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday granted N5 million bail to four men who allegedly burgled a warehouse and stole 1,000 cartons of air conditioner copper pipes.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Aje Afunwa, directed the accused to provide two sureties each in like sum who must be community or religious leaders.

‎The accused are Azuma Abubakar, 45, a security guard, Shuaibu Abubakar, 41, Abdulrahman Alkoke, 62, both truck pushers and Sadiq Mohammed, 25, a water peddler, all residents of Alagomeji in Ebute-meta area of Lagos.

The accused are standing trial on a four-count-charge bordering on conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp Peter Nwangwu, said the accused and others now at large, committed the offences on Jan. 23 at about 1.00 a.m at No. 182 Borno way, Alagomeji, Yaba area of Lagos.

Nwangwu alleged that the accused broke and entered a warehouse and carted away 1,000 cartons of air condition copper pipes valued at N28 million property of one Ikenna Anichebe.

He said the accused persons burgled the warehouse and loaded the stolen goods into a van, but were stopped and challenged by security guards around the area.

“The accused were later handed over to the police for further questioning since they could not give concrete reasons about the stolen items ,” Nwangwu said.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 285, 305, 326 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate adjourned the case to April 5 for proof of evidence. (NAN)
