Abuja, March 1, 2017 (NAN) The Registrar of Surveyor Council of Nigeria (SUCON), Mr Sulaiman Hassan, has called for the production and placement of more maps in public places to ease the movement of the citizens and visitors.
Hassan told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday that the non-availability of maps in places such as hotels, airports, bus-stops and other public places had hindered the movement of the people.
According to him, although the maps will not immediately generate income but on the long run it will when the people realises its importance.
He said that the provision of maps in strategic places would save money and time because people “spend more when they do not know their destination”.
Hassan said that for Nigerians to develop a map culture and make their movement easy, there was need to populate the airport, banks, bus-stop and other places in the cities with a copy of the country’s map.
“In Nigeria, we do not have map culture; in other developed countries when you get to the airport you pick up a map and it tells you where you are going.
“In Nigeria you need to ask from your fellow passengers for direction and by so doing you are wasting their time and your own time.
“One will end up spending more if he is not satisfied with the response,’’ he said.
He urged the education sector to teach pupils map reading right from primary school to make the people imbibe the culture. (NAN)
