Abuja, March 3, 2017 (NAN) The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) on Friday urged the various divisions of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) to develop professional codes.

Mr Kashim Ali, the President of COREN made the call in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Ali described engineering as a regimented profession where every work done was guided by laws and regulations, adding that the absence of professional codes had made it difficult to judge failed projects.

“If there is no regulation on a certain item of work and it fails for instance, it becomes very difficult to ascertain the cause of such failure.

“For now, because we are a British colony, we are still using British codes mainly; and many foreign nationals are bringing in and using their own codes in Nigeria.

“We need a Nigerian code so that whatever they are bringing, we can benchmark it against our own and if it falls short of the requirement, they can upgrade,” he said.

He said it was a global practice and urged the various divisions to standardise the few existing codes for proper publication.

Ali said the council had concluded plans to train faculty officers on the need to embrace outcome-based approach to engineering profession in universities across the country.

“A child who is going to the university must know why he is going to the university; what he is going to do; and what will be the use of what has been learnt from the university.

“Those things are critical; but many will take courses because an uncle or brother is an engineer and this has not been helpful to children.

Ali said preparing students from the start was the best approach to developing and preparing them for a successful career. (NAN)
