Abuja, April 5, 2017 (NAN) The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) said on Wednesday that it has concluded plans to hold a policy forum showcasing output-based engineering education in Nigeria.

COREN President Kashim Ali told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday that the forum would hold between May 11 and May 14.

Ali said that the forum would be organised for Deans of Faculty of Engineering in Nigerian universities, saying “the idea is to make engineering education in Nigeria acceptable globally.

“’Our educational system in Nigeria is input-based but what the world needed today is output-based education.

“’Input-based means a situation where the lecturer comes in, delivers his lecture, give you all the materials, you cram the one you needed to cram, know the ones you needed to know.

“When it is time for examination you pour it down and get your first class and when you are in the industry, you become confused.

“You are confused not because you have no knowledge, sometimes you do not know how to apply what you have learnt,” he said.

According to him, the output-based educational system entails the prospective students knowing what he or she will become upon graduation from the point of entry.

“A child will take a particular course because of what he or she wants to become in life and not because either his parents or uncle studied the same course.

“The proposed forum with all deans of faculty of engineering in Nigeria is to discuss the way forward,” he added. (NAN)
