Waste
By Mohammed Baba Busu
Lafia, April 20, 2017 (NAN) Mr Gabrial Aka’aka, Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources in Nasarawa State, has warned against indiscriminate dumping of waste on waterways.
Aka’aka, who spoke on Thursday in Lafia, shortly after visiting some areas affected by flood on April 13, said that such “carelessness” was largely responsible for the flooding in parts of the state capital.
He said that the dumping of waste on waterways was also responsible for environmental degradation in many parts of the country.
The commissioner frowned at the indiscriminate cutting of trees, saying that the destruction of such natural habitat was harmful to human existence.
“The presence of tress in an environment sustains water used by humans. We must not only protect the forests, but plant trees wherever we are, so as to maintain nature,” he said.
Aka’aka, who inspected areas hit by flood in Shabu and Kwandare areas, advised the people to be very wary of actions that could destroy the environment.
He said that government had adopted measures to address environmental degradation with tree nurseries being revived and people mobilised to plant trees in their environments and farmlands.
The commissioner assured Nasarawa residents that government would continue to construct bridges and culverts in order to curtail the problems of flooding across the state. (NAN)
