Jos, Jan. 15, 2017 (NAN) Mr Bitrus Hosea, Acting Chairman, Plateau Disability Commission, has tasked employers and institutions offering educational grants to always reserve a special quota for People With Disabilities(PWDs).

Hosea, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Sunday in Jos, regretted that PWDs had continued to suffer all forms of discriminations and deprivations, saying that such alienation was not encouraging.

“ Our findings have shown that during employment exercises, PWDs may not be selected even if they are qualified; this is against the principle of reintegration, inclusiveness and other efforts aimed at improving their socio economic status,” he said.

The official also called for special provisions for PWDs in the construction of public structures.

“We keep talking about this, but no one seems to take note. The physically challenged cannot access public buildings because no one considered his situation when th steps were put in place

“ Our society must get more sensitive and show adequate care for everyone; it is the only way to get the best contribution from every individual toward a prosperours nation,” he said.

Hosea urged the Pateau government to renovate the two PWDs skill acquisition centres in Jos, to create economic opporutnitie that would reduce poverty among people living with various forms of physical challenges.

He also enjoined philanthropists, corporate bodies and individuals to support such challenged persons to start up their businesses after acquiring skills so as to minimise the “odd” culture of begging by some PWDs. (NAN)
