Commercial motorcyclist, 20, jailed 18 months for car battery theft

Lagos, Feb. 16, 2017(NAN) An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday sentenced a 20-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Baba Yaga, to 18 months imprisonment for stealing a car battery.

The Magistrate, Mr A.A. Adesanya, who pronounced the verdict, did not give him an option of fine.

“You are hereby sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour,’’ he said.

Yaga had at his arraignment admitted committing the offence, attributing it to the handiwork of the Devil and urged the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing him.

Yaga, a resident of No. 12, Odobo Gate, Oke-Ira, Ogba in Ikeja, is being tried for unlawful possession and stealing of a motor battery.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, the accused committed the offences on Jan. 29 at about 5.00 a.m. at Obawole, Iju in Agege area of Lagos.

“The security guard sighted the accused carrying a carton and accosted him.

“He asked him what was in the carton but the accused dropped the carton and took to his heels.

“The guard gave him a hot chase and caught up with him … when the carton was opened, a motor battery was found.

Nwosu said the accused was immediately handed over to the police.

The offences contravened Sections 285 and 327 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. (NAN)
