Lagos, April 27, 2017 (NAN) A commercial motorcyclist, Umoru Mohammed,  who allegedly snatched a mobile phone valued at N300, 000 and N150,000 cash at gunpoint, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, 20, who lives at No. 19, Oba Adeyinka Estate, Lekki Phase 2, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

Mohammed, however, denied the charges preferred against him.

But the Police Prosecutor Donjor Petezi told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 20 at about 1.30 p.m. at Zenith Bank Bus Stop, Lekki.

According to him, the accused conspired with others still at large and stole an iPhone and N150, 000 belonging to the complainant, Raphael Nwandu.

Petezi said the accused, who was armed with a gun, robbed Nwandu of the items.

He alleged that the complainant, who had gone to withdraw money from the bank with ATM card, was attacked by the accused pointing a gun at him.

“The complainant went to withdraw money at Zenith Bank ATM, and when he was  driving out of the premises, the accused came with a gun, snatched the complainant’s iPhone and cash valued at N450,000.

“He was later apprehended by the police.”

The offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 409 provides two years for conspiracy.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Layinka, granted the accused bail in the sum of N400, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Layinka, who said the sureties must be gainfully employed, adjourned the case until May 8 for mention. (NAN)
