Child and mother: Bauchi State Govt, UNICEF to spend N18m on health care

Bauchi, July 10, 2017 (NAN) The Bauchi State Government, on Monday, said it would spend more than N18 million to ensure good health for mothers and children in the state.

Mr Adamu Gamawa, the State Chairman, Bauchi Primary Health Care Development Agency, made this disclosure while briefing newsmen on the first phase of of the Maternal Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) Week in Bauchi.

Gamawa said that the exercise would be conducted in 646 health facilities across the state in collaboration with United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF).

According to him, the four-day exercise will be conducted in the 323 wards in the 20 Local Government Areas of the state between July 10 and July 14.

Gamawa said that the interventions included, the provision of Vitamin A, iron and folate, Malaria drugs, screening and counseling on HIV/AIDS, birth registration.

He disclosed that while the State Government had provided MNCH N10 million, UNICEF contributed N8.623 million for the first round of the exercise.

Gamawa added that “we are targeting 1,364,228 under age five and 341,057 expectant mothers’’.

On malnutrition, Gamawa said that parents would be encouraged, after the screening of their children under age five, to blend their food with local products for healthy growth.

He said that already during the mid-year review of nutritional activities recently, the state targeted 32,666 beneficiaries and had so far from January to date captured 9,466 in that direction.
