Abuja, Jan.19, 2017 (NAN) The Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC) says it is set to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC).
Sir Ferdinand Anikwe, the Director-General of CBAAC told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja that activities to mark the celebration would include rolling out of drums for the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
“We are getting ready for FESTAC at 40; we have already slated this year for the events; we came to see the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo because of the preliminary events.
“One of which is the outing in March for his 80th birthday, but our major activities will take off from April this year and last till December for the FESTAC at 40.
“We will now roll out some drums to recognise his creative contributions to the hosting of FESTAC in 1977 and then his steadfast love for African Cultural expression.
“ So, we identify with him and all Africans in our journey to make sure we continue to propagate the noble values of our people culturally.
“You know we are there for a torrential understanding of unity of African countries and promotion of African cultural programmes,’’ CBAAB boss said.
NAN reports that FESTAC was held in Lagos in 1977, the festival was co-organised by the Federal Government and UNESCO and it represented the culmination and diversity of expressions and cultures.
The month-long event celebrated African culture and showcased to the world African music, fine arts, literature, drama, dance and religion.
About 16,000 participants, representing 56 African nations and countries of the African Diaspora, performed at the event.
FESTAC was held during the reign of General Olusegun Obasanjo, who the military Head of States. (NAN)
