Conflicts
Jos, March 13, 2017 (NAN) A Catholic NGO, Justice, Human Development and Peace Commission (JDPC), says it has resolved 70 per cent of conflicts in three local governments of Plateau, through its community peace partnerships
Mrs. Benedicta Daber, its Coordinator, made the disclosure at a one-day community peace workshop for the three local governments – Bokkos, Jos North and Wase – held on Monday in Jos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the workshop was organised by the JDPC, in collaboration with the Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation programme (NSRP), and the Islamic Counseling Initiatives of Nigeria.
According to Daper, the organization, through its conflict resolution mechanism in communities, resolved 43 conflicts situations in the three local governments.
She explained that the commonest causes of conflicts were land disputes, cattle rustling, as well as incessant attacks and counter attacks.
Daper, however, said that other conflicts, which JDPC could not handle, were referred to the civil society organisations and security agencies.
He said that 20 conflicts were resolved in Bokkos, 19 in Wase, and four in Jos North.
Mr Joseph Lengman, Director-General, Plateau State Peace Building Agency, in a keynote address, said that the Community Peace Partnership had played a pivotal role in conflict prevention and peace building.
Lengman lauded the partnership’s coordinated advocacy aimed at building confidence and trust among fighting communities via quick response to early warnings.
He promised to work closely with the NGO and its partners to end violent clashes and deepen the peace in the 17 local governments of Plateau.
Dr. Chris Kwaja of the University of Jos, in a paper titled: “Community Peace Partnerships in Plateau State”, said that community partnerships promote relationships and boost mutual confidence. (NAN)
