    Safety
    By Hussaina Yakubu
Kaduna, June 13, 2024 (NAN)  Experts have called for increased awareness on food safety practices to promote public health.
One of them, Mr John Tehinse, CEO of Funta Service Nigeria Ltd. spoke in an interview shortly after a training session he facilitated in Kaduna, which was organised by Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)
He encouraged the people to avoid unhealthy and contaminated foods due to their dangers to health.
The training on safety and food security was organized for women and youth-led businesses across Chikun, Kauru, Lere, and Jere LGAs.
The event was supported by GAIN under the Strengthening Nutrition in Priority Staples (SNIPS) project.
Tehinse emphasized the importance of stakeholders across the food chain understanding food safety, which is critical to public health.
He highlighted that food produced without following proper safety practices posed significant risks to consumers.
“Contaminated food can cause food poisoning. Food left for too long in an unprotected environment gets contaminated, leading to stomach pains and long-term health issues,” Tehnise said.
He stressed that nutritious food must also be safe and urged Nigerians to adopt food safety as a culture.
Tehinse praised GAIN for involving communities that lacked basic facilities in food processing.
“GAIN has significantly impacted by educating people who handle a major portion of food from rural to urban areas on food safety,” he said.
In a separate interview, Mrs Patricia Monwuba, a retired Deputy Director of NAFDAC, also facilitated a session on food processing regulations.
She guided the participants on adhering to food safety standards and regulations to ensure that the food sold was safe and nutritious.
Monwuba emphasized the need for proper food processing practices, including good manufacturing and hygienic practices.
She advised parents to check labels, expiry dates, health information, and NAFDAC registration numbers when buying processed food.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that GAIN is implementing the SNIPS project in partnership with GIZ and the Green Innovation Centre for the Agricultural and Food Sector in Nigeria.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • 1 out of 4 substance abusers a woman – NDLEA

Wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo launches Operation Clean Anambra of Substance Abuse

    Drugs

    By Lucy Osuizigbo-Okechukwu

Awka, June 13, 2024 (NAN) The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says one out of every four users of illicit drugs is a woman.

Mr Daniel Onyishi, Commander of the NDLEA in the state of Anambra, gave the statistics at the inauguration of the Operation Clean Anambra of Substance Abuse by Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative, in Awka.

Onyishi said that the agency was working with the Governor’s Wife to address the growing drug abuse cases in  Anambra.

“According to recent statistics, Nigeria alone has 14.4 per cent drug abuse prevalence rate and it is projected that by 2030, it will rise to 40 per cent if nothing is done.

“The major concern is that women, especially young girls, are embracing substance abuse. One out of every four drug abusers is a woman and one out of five will suffer substance abuse disorder.

“Women are key nurturers, moulders and  caregivers in the society and should not be involved in illicit drug abuse.

“As an agency, we are taking the sensitisation and enforcement into the communities because grassroots campaign is the only way to address the menace of drug abuse.

“We are not spirits, therefore, we urge community leaders to give us information about drug dealers in their environment. Illicit drug dealing is a crime and not a business,” he said.

In her address, Wife of the Anambra Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, lamented that substance abuse had become a pandemic in the society, requiring collective effort to tackle.

Soludo said that the menace of illicit drug abuse contributed to the high rate of crimes, violence and health complications.

“Healthy Living initiative is championing this fight in schools and communities to break the wall of illicit drugs economy which is booming at the detriment of our society.

“We have constituted Healthy Living Overwatch in the 179 communities to monitor illicit drug dealers and report same to security agencies.

“The target is to make everyone a driver of solution to rid Anambra of this deadly disease called drug abuse and save the lives and future of our children,” Soludo said.

Also speaking, Dr Afam Obidike, Commissioner for Health, said that the campaign would save the youths from degenerating into a generational tragedy with drug addiction.

In his remarks,  Mr Titus Akpudo, President-General, Anambra State Association of Town Union, promised to take the message of substance abuse to the nooks and crannies of the state.

“As community leaders,  we  must support the Governor’s Wife in the fight to eliminate substance abuse in our communities because if we do not act now, it will hunt us in future,” he said.(NAN) www.nannews.ng

FCT students applaud NAWOJ, others for free sanitary pads

    By Justina Auta

Abuja, June 13, 2024 (NAN) Some students in FCT have expressed appreciation to the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) for distribution of free sanitary pads to reduce procurement cost and increase access during their menstruation.

The students during the menstrual hygiene advocacy for teenage girls, held at Junior Secondary School, Jabi 1 on Thursday in Abuja, said the gesture would alleviate the challenges they usually face during their menstrual period.

Khadijat Mohammed, a JSS 2 student, explained that she often used old worn out wrappers due to the high cost of sanitary pads.

“My elder sister usually buys sanitary pad for me, but due to the increasing cost of sanitary pads, we have been forced to use our old worn out wrappers during menstruation, “she said.

Also, Somadima Emmanuel, JSS 1 student, said the high cost of sanitary pads, forced her to use tissue paper during her menstruation, which exposed her to infection.

According to her, the free sanitary pads have eliminated the cost of procuring one and reduced risk of infections.

Joseph Nwosu, a junior student, said he had been empowered with more knowledge on GBV, menstrual hygiene management and negative vices that might hinder his development.

He, therefore, appealed to the government and other stakeholders to make available sanitary pads for female students to reduce cost of procuring it and increase their concentration in school during their menstrual period.

Mrs Bassey Ita-Ikpang, FCT Chairperson, NAWOJ, said the initiative was to ensure accessibility of sanitary pads to underprivileged girls, educate students on menstrual hygiene management and Gender Based Violence (GBV).

Ita-Ikpang, who noted the high cost of sanitary products, especially for underprivileged girls, stressed the need for the government and other stakeholders to ensure girls are able to afford and access menstrual pads.

According to her, the theme, “If condom is Free, let’s make menstrual pads free too” resonates from the need to promote access to sanitary pad.

“We want to ensure that those who truly need it are captured. Menstrual period is a natural thing that cannot be controlled, while condom is for pleasure.

“Free distribution of pads should be a priority, if condoms are freely available in public facilities then, menstrual pads should also be available for easy access,” she said.

On the issue of GBV, the NAWOJ Chairperson emphasised the critical role boys play in ending the menace and other harmful traditional practices affecting women and girls.

“When you are talking about gender, you cannot be successful when you have not brought in the boys.

“The boys should also know the things that are right and that will help them know what they shouldn’t do to the girls,” she said.

Also, Rabiatu Abdullahi, Vice Principal, JSS, Jabi 1, commended the association, adding that the initiative would alleviate the hardship some of the students face in accessing menstrual pads.

Similarly, Naomi Okomudo, President, Abuja Royal Women Empowerment Initiative, while speaking on GBV, encouraged the students to be vigilant, seek help where necessary and always speak out to ensure perpetrators were prosecuted to avoid reoccurrence.

Also, Francisca Ogar, who spoke on menstrual hygiene, advised the students to be deliberate about their hygiene and keep track of their menstrual period to enable them prepare ahead with materials needed during their menstrual cycle.

Other highlights of the events were the distribution of writing materials to some of the students. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng0

    By Victor Adeoti

Osun, June 13, 2024 (NAN) Dr Razak Akindele, the Executive Secretary, Osun Health Insurance Scheme (O’HIS), has said that 280,472 people have registered in the scheme.

Akindele disclosed this to newsmen  on Thursday in Osogbo.

He said that from the record of enrollees, 244,000 were from the formal sector, 13,472 were from informal sector while 23,000 were pensioners.

Akindele said that for civil servants, who belong to the formal sector, 1.5 per cent was being deducted from their basic salary every month, while government contributed 4.5 per cent.

He said that people in the informal sector would pay N12,066 annually under the premium package, while pensioners were enrolled for free by the state government.

Akindele also said that Gov. Ademola Adeleke had also approved the enrollment of pregnant women in the state for free under the scheme.

He also said that the scheme was no longer dealing with Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) in rendering services to its clients.

Akindele explained that this was due to the challenges patients encounter in getting code from HMO for treatment.

According to him, the agency was now providing services directly to its enrollees and no longer through HMOs.

“Although, we are not yet there, but we are moving to where we plan to be.

“With the support of the governor, we are rendering quality services to all our clients.

“And in the next one year, we are planning to enroll three million people,” he said.

Akindele also said the agency had what it called “Catastrophic fund” meant to give concession to patients needing serious surgical operations.

He said that as a way of encouraging hospitals under the scheme, the agency had increased the payment for cesarean section for its patients from the initial N30,000 to N85,000.

Akindele said the agency would continue to sensitise residents in the state of the importance as well as benefits of the scheme.(NAN)

Cholera Outbreak: NCDC warns against contaminated water sources

    Cholera

    By Abujah Racheal

Abuja, June 13, 2024(NAN) The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has warned Nigerians against the potential spread of cholera through contaminated water sources.

Dr Jide Idris, the Director –General of NCDC, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja.

NAN reports that Cholera is a deadly disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, associated with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water.

It has also been found in seemingly clean places, including affluent neighbourhoods, hotels and restaurants with poor hygiene practices among others.

Idris said that recent reports of increase in cholera cases in some states prompted the agency to alert state authorities and citizens to take immediate precautions.

“The contamination typically happens due to inadequate sanitation and poor infrastructure, which allow sewage to infiltrate drinking water systems,” he said.

The NCDC boss advised states to ensure proper treatment of water before consumption.

“Boiling water and using water purification tablets can significantly reduce the risk of infection,” he said.

He said that the centre will   continue to monitor the situation closely, and is collaborating with state governments to implement measures to control the spread of the disease.

“Public awareness campaigns are also underway to educate people on the importance of safe water practices and hygiene.

“Cholera is a highly infectious disease that can cause severe dehydration and even death if not treated promptly.

“Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting and muscle cramps. Early detection and treatment are crucial in managing the disease and preventing fatalities,” he said.

Idris said that as the rainy season approaches, there was a need for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to safeguard public health.

He stressed the importance of community efforts in maintaining clean water supplies and proper waste management to combat the spread of cholera.

He said that between Jan. 1 to June 11, 1,141 suspected and 65 confirmed cases of cholera with 30 deaths were reported in 96 Local Government Areas in 30 States.

Idris said  Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa and Lagos States, contribute 90 per cent to  the burden of cholera in the country.

He said that the multi-sectoral National Cholera Technical Working Group, led by the NCDC and other partners have been providing support to the affected states.

He said that this support includes risk communication, active case search, laboratory diagnosis, case management, provision of response among others.

NAN reports that Cholera outbreaks have affected 18 countries in Africa over the last two years.

In southern and eastern Africa, more than 6,000 people have died and nearly 350,000 cases have been reported since a series of outbreaks began in late 2021.

According to the centre, cholera can occur when sewage mixes with drinking water supplies leading to severe health risks.

Prevention relies on safe water, sanitation, hygiene, and the use of oral cholera vaccines. In 2017, a global strategy aimed to reduce cholera deaths by 90 per cent by 2030 was launched.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Cholera: data collection underway, outbreak contained in Lagos- Commissioner

    Cholera

    By Abujah Racheal

Abuja, June 13, 2024 (NAN) The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, says the state government is actively collecting data on the recent cholera disease outbreak in the state.

Abayomi disclosed this in interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday in Abuja

NAN reports that in the last 72 hours, there has been a significant increase in severe gastroenteritis cases in Lagos State, particularly in Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe.

The outbreak has led to 60 hospitalisations and five deaths, primarily due to late presentation with extreme dehydration.

Authorities have heightened surveillance and response efforts, with investigations into a possible water contamination source in the Lekki and Victoria Island areas.

There is a suspicion of a cholera outbreak, with samples taken for confirmation.

Recent rainfall has exacerbated the situation, especially in urban slums and crowded areas with poor sanitation.

Cholera, a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening disease causing severe diarrhoea, poses a significant health risk in regions with inadequate water treatment and sanitation.

While acknowledging the presence of the disease, Abayomi assured the public that measures have been effective in preventing a large-scale outbreak.

“We have successfully contained the situation and prevented it from exploding.

“An update with detailed information and statistics is expected to be released later today,” he stated.

He said that the state had continued to monitor the situation closely and was implementing strategies to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.

“The public is advised to stay informed and follow recommended health guidelines,” he advised.

NAN reports that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), said that cholera spreads through contaminated food or water and poor sanitation practices, including lack of handwashing.

Symptoms include severe watery diarrhoea, vomiting, rapid dehydration, muscle cramps, fever, and sometimes collapse.

Treatment involves oral rehydration salts for mild to moderate dehydration and intravenous fluids for severe cases under medical supervision.

Preventive measures include ensuring safe drinking water by boiling, chlorinating, or using bottled water, avoiding ice from untreated water, maintaining proper sanitation, and practising good hygiene such as regular handwashing with soap and clean water.

Citizens are advised to follow food safety guidelines and rely on health authorities for updates and guidance.

Suspected cholera cases should be reported via emergency hotlines 08023169485, 08137412348, or helplines 767 or 112.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health is committed to keeping the public informed and ensuring citizens’ health.

As of April 28, Nigeria had reported 815 suspected cholera cases and 14 deaths across 25 states.(NAN) www.nannews.ng

    Maternal
    By Victor Adeoti
Osogbo, June 13, 2024 (NAN) Mrs Franka Okeke, a United Kingdom-based maternal health advocate, has appealed to government at all levels to improve on the health care facilities to reduce maternal deaths in the country.

Okeke made the appeal in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday while recounting her near death experience during child birth in a government hospital in Lagos.

She said as a way of minimising maternal deaths in Nigeria, there is urgent need for government to increase budgetary allocation to primary health facilities and make the health facilities more friendly for pregnant women.

“Government at levels should invest adequate resources in infrastructure development, equipment and drugs for the adequate provision of basic and comprehensive emergency care in accordance with global standards,” the maternal health survivor said.

Okeke, who noted that the high prevalence of maternal mortality was of concern, called for urgent action by the government to stop needless maternal deaths.

“Government need to do something to stop the needless maternal deaths in Nigeria.

“There is need to ensure proper monitoring of private hospitals because there are many with quack doctors, while government hospitals are also too slow and there are some conditions that are urgent.

“Besides, government should provide comprehensive health coverage for Nigerians, especially pregnant women so that out of pocket medical expenses can be minimised”, she said.

Narrating her ordeal, Okeke said, “God delivered me from near death experience while giving birth. There is so much to thank God for in our lives.

“I had fluid in the lung, several complications, haematoma and sepsis. Even doctors misdiagnosed my condition.

“I had preterm twin babies and I had to leave them for months, and go to Lagos University Teaching Hospital and other places, looking for solution.

“The doctors said it was my womb that was protruded which led to sepsis and more complications.

“Also I had surgery and doctors were not ready to repeat another surgery. My blood level was very low but God saved me”, she said.

Okeke, who noted that she recently released a single track song titled “I’m loving you Jesus” on YouTube and other digital outlets, said the song was to thank God for saving her life during childbirth.

Okeke also said that she had published a book titled “The Tears We Bleed’, endorsed by the Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecologist of Nigeria, which chronicled maternal death and fistula issues in Nigeria.(NAN)(www.nannnews.ng)
