  • NIPOST: Thinking outside the box of postal services

NIPOST: Thinking outside the box of postal services

    Postal

    By Funmilola Gboteku/Stellamaris Ashinze

Lagos, June 2, 2024 (NAN) In today’s digital age, postal services face significant challenges in maintaining relevance and staying competitive in an industry that is rapidly evolving.

With the rise of e-commerce, changing consumer behaviour, and advances in technology, postal services must adapt to meet the demands of an increasingly digital world.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday took a check on some posts about the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), a government-owned and operated corporation, on social media platforms, specifically LinkedIn and Nairaland, to gauge netizens’ perception about how the Service has fared with the evolution of technology.

The general perception was that NIPOST had lost its pre-technology glory and was dying, and though blessed with human resources, its equipment, infrastructure and style of operation were outdated and antiquated.

Commenting on a write up on NIPOST on LinkedIn, Ebenezer, a social media user, said that NIPOST, having lost its pre-technology past glory, would need to go back to the drawing board to embrace new technologies.

He said that its mode of parcel processing, sorting and distribution could be very daunting and would require modern automated processing equipment.

Ebenezer explained that “this will mean for it to scrap the old style of mail (package) sorting, processing and distribution.

“Being 10 dance steps behind, NIPOST needs to re-map its service regions via Zip codes or Post codes, to include newly built up cities, streets, roads, spaces by working along with real estate developers, getting approval from authorities at city, local, state and federal levels.

“Accurate mapping will be required to address gaps in both existing and planned infrastructure, to include updated codes.

Also commenting, another netizen, David, said NIPOST and Africa’s logistics infrastructure generally needed about 15 million miles of roads to connect wards, with villages, towns with cities, and transnational trunk roads with neighbouring countries.

Echezona, a LinkedIn user, on the other hand, said there was no need reviving NIPOST, adding that it should be allowed to die a natural death like the Nigeria Telecommunication Ltd. (NITEL).

In his own view, Nsikak, another netizen, said NIPOST had the infrastructure, human resources and competence, adding that all it needed was an upgrade or the government leaving it to the private sector to handle.

He said that last mile delivery was of utmost importance to the development of a nation.

Similarly, Fadeyi, another person commenting on LinkedIn, said NIPOST was not as proactive as before because there were no effective postal code system.

Innocent, on the other hand, said to revive the corporation, government should look for avenues to outsource the use of NIPOST infrastructure to private sector actors, who would add more value to the economy in the interest of the people.

Commenting on Nairaland, Habeeb, said the Nigerian Postal Service was his most patronised public parastatal and every time he went there, he couldn’t help but feel like he had been transported back in time.

“From the structure of the building, to the old staff, and the analogue and old equipment still in use; the post office screams of the nineties,” Habeeb said.

However, contrary to the opinions of many social media users, The Postal Manager in Kaduna, Mrs Tabitha Tauna, said during a road show, that NIPOST services still existed, as the evolution of technology had only improved the organisation’s service delivery.

She noted that some challenges, which included absence of street names and numbers in some parts of the state among other problems, were surmounted with phone calls (Technology), where one could be called to describe his/her location or go to the post office for collection of items.

“With this, the mobile phone which is perceived as a technology that ousted postal services, has only made our operations easier,” she said.

Tauna said that beyond delivery of letters and sales of stamp, NIPOST had diversified into some areas of e-commerce, which also had to do with internet and mobile phones.

She said that people could order for items online and certainly it would not be delivered online, but the human factor would be engaged for delivery, adding that delivering such orders to their destinations was in the purview of NIPOST.

The postal manager explained that NIPOST, which also engaged in agency services, was the regulatory body for all logistics services.

A NAN check of the NIPOST website, www.nipost.gov.ng, further shows that the corporation has diversified into other areas asides postal and regulatory services to generate revenue for the government.

The organisation said on its website that as part of its Commercial Business Unit registered by the Federal Government, most of its unused/underutilised spaces within and outside post office buildings in good locations nationwide had been leased out.

It said that there were warehouses for commercial leasing and operational use, space rental for third party uses e.g billboards, wall drapes, electronic displays and other signages.

The website also showed that the corporation had also gone into real estate consultancy/facility management services to the general public, such as estate agency, amongst other services.

Another NAN check of the NIPOST Branch Office at Ijora in Lagos State, shows that the organisation has gone into workshop services like producing various wood and metal furniture, fittings like wardrobes, sofas/settees, beddings, kitchen cabinets.

It was also producing dining furniture, office furniture and fittings, motor body building work, including truck cabins and tankers, doors and gates.

Other services observed included electrical works, coil winding works, plumbing services, corporate gift items, roof works, aluminum works, fitting works and vocational training.

Speaking to NAN in an interview, Mr Remigius Ihediwa, the Assistant General Manager, NIPOST Ijora Branch, said the vocational workshop was in top gear as it engaged in different wood works.

Ihediwa said that like other federal parastatal agencies, it was mandated to use its excess capacity to generate revenue, therefore meeting public and NIPOST needs since 2004.

“NIPOST workshop services include home and office furniture, metal works, chairs for students and church pews, among others.

The official added that the workshop was also used for vocational training, where people applied to train for carpentry, upholstery and electrical works among other skills.

“Individuals or organisations can also liase with NIPOST for training.

“NIPOST has supplied students’ furniture to both the Lagos State Government and the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

“We have also supplied pews to churches as well as carried out training for repentant militants during ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration,” Ihediwa said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Tinubu has never influenced electoral process, Vice-President Shettima says

    Influence
    By Mujidat Oyewole
Ilorin, June 1, 2024 (NAN) Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Saturday in Ilorin said the present administration led by President Bola Tinubu has never influenced the electoral process.

Shettima, while speaking during the 30th anniversary of Prof. Yusuf Ali’s Ghalib Chambers, explained why President Tinubu decided to steer clear of the electoral process.

He said this was because of Tinubu’s belief in political freedom, fair play and justice.

“President Tinubu never influenced electoral process and we (at the Presidency) never used instruments of office to haunt or hound perceived opponents,” the Vice-President said.

Shettima said democracy can only survive by adherence to the rule of law and quality of governance, not necessarily by system of government.

The Guest Speaker of the occasion, Mr Babatunde Fashola, noted that the call in some quarters for the reintroduction of parliamentary system of government might be wrong.

Fashola, a former Minister of Works and Housing, advised those calling for the reintroduction to deeply think.

”They should reflect on whether the reasons which caused its collapse in the First Republic had been sorted out or not.”

He submitted that only quality governance would shape the society, not the system of government.

“Nigeria once practised this parliamentary system, but it failed and led the country into unwarranted disaster.

“Let us think deeply on why the parliamentary system failed us and ask ourselves if we have overcome those reasons,” Fashola said.

The guest speaker suggested liberal democracy that would ensure better and improved livelihood of Nigerians, rather than calling for a change of system of government.

Fashola commended the celebrant, Yusuf Ali who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), for his robust contribution to the nation’s legal system.

Earlier, the Founder of Ghalib Chambers, Ali had thanked God for all he achieved, saying “my heart is full of gratitude, humility and deepest appreciation to Almighty Allah who is the Creator and the Divine Architect.

“As I reflect on the journey, I am reminded of the countless times Allah intervened, guided, and blessed me, even when all hope seemed lost.”

Ali thanked his parents, teachers, clients and those who shared their wisdom and expertise with him, regardless of the setting or circumstance, his siblings, children and his late wife.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that many dignitaries graced the occasion, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

The list of dignitaries in attendance also had the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, and the Founder of Al-Hikma University, Ilorin, Abdulraheem Oladimeji.

NAN reports that the Ghalib Chambers compiled a compendium of over 450 pages, launched by Vice-President Shettima, as part of the anniversary and contribution to the legal and general community.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • LASG hands over police station in Epe

LASG hands over police station  in Epe

At the handing over of newly built Epe Marine Police Station Division

    Handing over

    By Aderonke Ojediran

Lagos, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The Lagos State Government (LASG) on Saturday handed over a police station it constructed  to the Marina Division of the force in Epe.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN)reports the old police station is to be demolished by the state government   to pave the way for a road project in the local government area.

Speaking at the handing  over ceremony , Special Adviser to  Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Infrastructure, Mr  Olufemi Daramola, said the planned demolition of  the old station and construction of a new one was to enable government promptly deliver the expansion of Awolowo Way-Ita Marina road project.

Daramola, represented by  a Permanent Secretary,  Mr Ayodele Somide, said the old police station was  marked for demolition  because it was standing in the way of the ongoing project.

Daramola said  that the expansion of segment five  of the project required  redesign of the existing vertical and horizontal curves on the road alignment.

This, according to him, necessitated the relocation of the existing Epe Marina Police  post and some other structures on the new road alignment.

“Taking into cognisance the security implications, a new Marina Police Post had to be built to accommodate police officers .

“This is the only outstanding challenge to the full completion of the rehabilitation/upgrade of  the strategic arterial/inner roads (Phase II) in Epe L.G.A, which is currently at 95 per cent completion”,he said.

He said the expansion of the road and other inner city roads in the town had become inevitable to eliminate potential gridlock and reduce travel time through improved road connectivity.

He said government was improving road infrastructure in the  area because “Epe and its environs are presently witnessing an influx of people and increased traffic volume as a result of industrial and commercial growth arising from the development of the Dangote Oil Refinery, Air and Sea ports as well as industries within the Lekki Free Trade Zone”

Speaking ,Mr Fady Bourjely, representative of Cranberg Construction Limited, the contractor handling the road project ,said the new police station was built by government because the  old one was  delaying the execution of the road project.

“The implication is that we can continue the work. What is holding us back now is for the officers to shift to the new building so we can continue as fast as possible.

” The project is now just with the demolition of the old police station which will take place June 5 so we can commence work, by August we should be done.

” Although it depends on the weather because now we are in the rainy season. It may have some delay time because of the weather,” Bourjely said.

A  representative of the police , SP Richard Ekemerusu, commended the state government on the new station.

“One thing about the structure is that even though it is close to the river, water can never wash it away.

“There are boulders, which are big rocks arranged around the structure, preventing erosion from washing it  away.

“The former structure that we were using was  old  , not befitting the status of the Police.

“But the present one is a very beautiful one, the one that will actually help us to perform our duties  well.

” There are a lot of things there. You have the security cameras.Inside, the personnel that are working can see far away from where the structure is located and criminals can be sighted far away.

“With the CCTV camera, we are going to perform. We are performing very well, but this one is going to improve our performance, and we are going to make the citizens happy because our job is to protect  lives and property of residents,” he said.

NAN reports that the government also  handed over a 12 -room bungalow to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in Badagry.

Daramola said that the 12 -room bungalow would facilitate the delivery of the ongoing  Hospital Road project (Phase 1), in the area.

NAN reports  the old NCoS staff quarters were on the Right of Way of the Hospital Road project (Phase 1), a strategic road that transverses Idale, Akarakunmoh, Povita, Topo and Ajido communities to the Lagos-Badagry Expressway via Joseph Dosu Road.

” The result is a sleek and functional living space that prioritises the well-being and comfort of the NCoS staff.

” The project reached its fruition after the tireless efforts, of the project team from the office of Infrastructure and the Staff of the NCoS which culminated in the official handing over.

“Also the handing over of the quarters would make room for the completion of Hospital Road, which is currently  80 per cent completed”,he said

Speaking at the handing over ceremony ,Controller of Corrections, State Headquarters, NCoS. Mr B. R. Freedman, he appreciated the LASG, for the  expeditious  reconstruction and handing over of the staff quarters

He said that the reconstructed staff quarters were delivered  with a generator to ensure uninterrupted power supply, adding it  would enable  NCoS staff to carry out their tasks efficiently.

  • Unity Schools: 70,603 pupils write 2024 common entrance exam

    Entrance
    By Funmilayo Adeyemi
Abuja, June 1, 2024 (NAN) Some 70,603 candidates sat for the 2024 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) into federal unity colleges on Saturday.
The Registrar/CEO, National Examination Council (NECO), Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, during the monitoring in Abuja, said there was a reduction in the registration compared to 2023, when 72,865 registered.
Reeling out the statistics, Wushishi said the council registered 33,335 male and 37,268 female, a lower registration compared to 2023 with 34,064 male and 38,801 female.
According to him, the candidates were posted to write the examination in  599 centres across the country.
He said that many factors were responsible for the lower registration, including the economy.
“There was a slight increase in the cost of registration and we all know what is happening in the economy.
“This affected everybody, especially those in the rural areas; candidates are not sponsored at this level,” he said.
Speaking on the promise made in 2023 by the then Permanent Secretary, Mr David Adejo, that no underage candidate would be allowed to sit for the exams, Wushishi said the council had implemented the decision.
“We have promised to addressed the situation of underage children writing the exams and we did.
“You will find out that most of the candidates you see here that look underage are not, because some of them have just one month to complete 10 years.
“So, in such cases, we excuse them to write; we don’t have any issue that has to do with any underage sitting this exams,” he added.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Sen. Lawal Usman, commended NECO for the conduct of the examination.
Usman, representing Kaduna Central, urged the council to upgrade its examinations to ICT platform just at conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
He said that sponsorship for NECO and JAMB was rolled out throughout his state.
“We contributed over 200 million to parents to be able to pay for the children’s NECO and JAMB.
“I am calling on other senators and house members to key into this because this is the foundation for every child,” he said.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs Didi Walson-Jack, who spoke on the assessment of the examination, expressed satisfaction with the conduct.
“We’ve just been monitoring the ongoing NECO exams; in the FCT, we have 55 centres, but we have so far monitored three.
“Generally, everything is going on well and we are happy with what NECO has put in place to ensure a smooth and seamless exercise,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the schools visited during the monitoring include Model Secondary School, Maitama and Government Day Secondary School, Wuse II. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

NYSC embarks on monthly environmental sanitation in Niger

    Sanitation
    By Rita Iliya
Minna, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), in Niger has embarked on monthly environmental sanitation to ensure a sustainable and healthy environment for residents.

Mrs Olayinka Abdulwahab, Coordinator of NYSC in Niger, disclosed this at the launch of the sanitation in Kpakungu community in Minna on Saturday.

She explained that during the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) in communities, the scheme realised that most ill health cases treated were due to poor environmental sanitation.

“Due to our experience during our HIRD initiative programme, the management of NYSC introduced the environment sanitation based on what was observed.

“Some of the diseases treated were caused by lack of people not maintaining good hygiene, so we will be doing this sanitation monthly to spur people to also keep their environment clean,” she said.
