  • Human right organisation calls for religious tolerance

    Call
    By Thompson Yamput
Kano, June 6, 2024 (NAN) The Christian Solidarity World Wide Nigeria, aa human rights organisation, has called for religious tolerance among the faithful for the peace and development of the country.

Rev. Yunusa Nmadu, Chief Executive Officer of the organisation in Nigeria, made the call on Thursday in Kano during a training workshop organised for journalists across the northern part of the country.

Nmadu observed that the effects of religious intolerance, especially in the northern part of the country, had greatly affected the economic and social life of the citizens.

“It’s no longer news that some communities are lacking in basic social amenities due to the religious intolerance existing among residents who are supposed to be united and doing things together for the common good.

“Discrimination and hostility to one another due to religious differences are against section 38 (1) of the 1999 Constitution and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

“This is the more reason why journalists need to rise to the occasion to enlighten people on the Freedom of Religion or Belief contained in the constitution,” he said.

He also said that for 16 years, the organisation had been carrying out advocacy programmes, meeting leaders of various religious bodies, community leaders and political office holders, on the best ways of harmonising better working relationships.

He, however, called on those whose rights are being trampled upon to feel free to contact the organisation for assistance, no matter how serious or little the matter is, for immediate address to give room for peace and progress.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the training workshop which began on June 3 will end on June 6.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Economic Hardship : Group seeks salary cut for NASS members

    Salary

    By Aminu Garko

Kano, May 6, 2024 ( NAN) An  advocacy group, Patriotic Volunteers for Good Governance, has called on the National Assembly members to take a pay cut that will reflect the present economic realities.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the group’s National President, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, made the plea at a news conference in Kano on Thursday.

Alhaji said that politicians must lead by example by voluntarily reducing their salaries.

He said the demand by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for a minimum wage of N494, 000 was unfair and insensitive to the current economic realities.

The president urged the NLC to accept the federal government’s offer of N60, 000 to prevent job losses.

Alhaji emphasised that the NLC’s demand might not be sustainable and would drain the country’s resources, leading to hyperinflation and stagflation.

He called on labour leaders to consider the fate of other Nigerians and the social and economic repercussions of their demands.

Alhaji advocated for a drastic reduction in the cost of governance, adding that the cost drains so much of the country’s wealth.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Dr Sheriff Almuhajir, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the bank, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday in Damaturu.

Eid el-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) is the second of the two main holidays celebrated in Islam.

It’s being observed on the 10th day of Dhul Hijja (the 12th month of Islamic Calender), to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) devotion to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command.
Muslim faithful across the globe celebrate the day by animal sacrifice such as ram, sheep, cattle and goat.

According to Almuhajir, the facility will be implemented under its Sallah Ram Loans scheme, adding that it would be disburse into category A & B, with customers on category A accessing N150,000 while N75,000 for those on category B.

He said the loan would be repaid through monthly repayment of N6,000 for customers on category A and N3,300 for those on category B.

Almuhajir listed the conditions for accessing the loan to include having an account with the bank with a minimum balance of N2,500 for ATM cards and other services.

He said the applicant must obtain form from the banking hall at N1,000, and must be a civil servant on the payroll of the state or local government councils of the state.

Other requirements, he said, include two passport photographs, NIN number, payment slip and other relevant documents.

Naira Abuse: Lawyer calls for amendment of CBN Act

    Naira

    Aderogba George

Abuja, June 6, 2024(NAN) Prof. Cyprian Edward-Ekpo, Director General, Institute of Law Research and Development of United Nations (ILAWDUN), Washington DC, has advocated the amendment of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act to accommodate spraying of naira.

Edward-Ekpo said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.

He said the section of CBN Act 2007 which prohibits the spraying of naira would not add any value to the development of the country.

He said the amendment became necessary to avoid trampling on the fundamental right of the people, adding that naira spraying had always been part of our culture.

According to him spraying naira does not contribute negatively to the nation’s economy neither does it aggravate inflation.

“So I don’t see how that should be an issue that will lead to the enactment of Section 21 of the CBN Act.

“During our forefathers when people were engaging in marriages, naming ceremonies and they invited kings, family members and others, they would dance and the people would drop money for the celebrants’’, he said.

This, according to him, is for the purpose of demonstrating to the community they had contributed to the celebrant’s welfare.

“As far as this has remained the culture of the people over time, I don’t see the need to make a law to stop it’’, he told NAN.

He said stated those who drafted the section of CBN Act that prohibits spraying of money were yet to convince Nigerians on why the law was necessary.

He, therefore, urged the national assembly to strike out the section of the law. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
