  • Presidency clears misconceptions on New York Times report on Nigeria

Presidency clears misconceptions on New York Times report on Nigeria

    Economy

    By Salif Atojoko

Abuja, June 16, 2024 (NAN) Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, on Sunday reacted to a recent report published in New York Times on Nigeria’s economy.

He said Ruth Maclean and Ismail Auwal’s feature story titled, ‘Nigeria Confronts Its Worst Economic Crisis in a Generation,’ published on June 11, appeared typically predetermined and followed the usually denigrating way foreign media establishments reported African countries for several decades.

He said that because of the misleading slant of the report, there was need to clear up some misconceptions conveyed by the reporters as regards the economic policies of the Tinubu administration that came into power at the end of May 2023.

“Most significant about the report was that it painted the dire experiences of some Nigerians amid the inflationary spiral of last year, and blamed it all on the policies of the new administration.

“The report, based on several interviews, was all gloom and doom, as it never mentioned the positive aspects in the same economy as well as the ameliorative policies being implemented by the central and state governments,” said Onanuga.

According to him, President Tinubu did not create the economic problems Nigeria faces today.

“He inherited them. As a respected economist in our country once put it, Tinubu inherited a dead economy.

“The economy was bleeding and needed quick surgery to avoid being plunged into the abyss, as happened in Zimbabwe and Venezuela.

“This was the background to the policy direction taken by the government in May/June 2023, with the abrogation of the fuel subsidy regime and the unification of the multiple exchange rates standing out.”

The Special Adviser said that for decades, Nigeria had maintained a fuel subsidy regime that gulped 84.39 billion dollars between 2005 and 2022 from the public treasury in a country with huge infrastructural deficits and in high need of better social services.

He said the state oil firm, NNPC Ltd, the sole importer, had amassed trillions of naira in debts for absorbing the unsustainable subsidy payments in its books.

“By the time Tinubu took over the leadership of the country, there was no provision made for fuel subsidy payments in the national budget beyond June 2023.

“The budget itself had a striking feature: it planned to spend 97 per cent of revenue servicing debt, with little left for recurrent or capital expenditure. The previous government had resorted to massive borrowing to cover such costs.

“Like oil, the exchange rate was also being subsidised by the government, with an estimated 1.5 billion dollars spent monthly by the CBN to ‘defend’ the currency against the unquenchable demand for the dollar by the country’s import-dependent economy,” explained Onanuga.

He stated that by keeping the rate low, arbitrage grew as a gulf existed between the official rate and the rate used by over 5,000 Bureau de Change (BDCs) that were previously licensed by the Central Bank.

“What was more, the country was failing to fulfil its remittance obligations to airlines and other foreign businesses, such that FDIs and investment in the oil sector dried up, and notably Emirate Airlines cut off the Nigerian route.

“President Tinubu had to deal with the cancer of public finance on the first day by rolling back the subsidy regime and the generosity that spread to neighbouring countries. Then, his administration floated the naira,” said Onanuga.

He said that after some months of the storm, with the naira sliding as low as N1,900 to the US dollar, some stability was restored, though there remained some challenges.

“The exchange rate is now below N1,500 to the dollar, and there are prospects that the naira could regain its muscle and appreciate to between N1,000 and N1,200 before the end of the year.

“The economy recorded a trade surplus of N6.52 trillion in Q1, as against a deficit of N1.4 trillion in Q4 of 2023. Portfolio investors have streamed in as long-term investors.

“When Diageo wanted to sell its stake in Guinness Nigeria, it had the Singaporean conglomerate, Tolaram, ready for the uptake,” he said.

He was emphatic that with the World Bank extending a 2.25 billion dollar loan and other loans by the AfDB and Afreximbank coming in, Nigeria had become bankable again.

He explained that such was all because the reforms being implemented had restored some confidence.

“The inflationary rate is slowing down as shown in the figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics for April. Food inflation remains the biggest challenge, and the government is working very hard to rein it in with increased agricultural production.

“The Tinubu administration and the 36 states are working assiduously to produce food in abundance to reduce the cost. Some state governments, such as Lagos and Akwa Ibom, have set up retail shops to sell raw food items to residents at a lower price than the market price.

“The Tinubu government, in November last year, in consonance with its food emergency declaration, invested heavily in dry-season farming, giving farmers incentives to produce wheat, maize, and rice,” he said.

According to Onanuga, the CBN has donated N100 billion worth of fertiliser to farmers, and numerous incentives are being implemented, adding that in the western part of Nigeria, six governors had announced plans to invest massively in agriculture.

“With all the plans being executed, inflation, especially food inflation, will soon be tamed.

“Nigeria is not the only country in the world facing a rising cost of living crisis. The USA, too, is contending with a similar crisis, with families finding it hard to make ends meet. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen raised this concern recently.

“Europe is similarly in the throes of a cost-of-living crisis. As those countries are trying to confront the problem, the Tinubu administration is also working hard to overturn the economic problems in Nigeria.

“Our country faced economic difficulties in the past, an experience that has been captured in folk songs. Just like we overcame then, we shall overcome our present difficulties very soon,” said Onanuga. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Fathers

    Joy Mbachi

Awka, June 16, 2024 (NAN) The Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province on the Niger, Most Revd Alexander Ibezim, has charged fathers to take total responsibility for their families against the hot chase for materialism.

Ibezim, also Bishop of the Diocese of Awka, Anglican Communion, charged Fathers to live their lives in the fear of God in order to achieve their full potentials and grow their families in the path of God.

Ibezim gave the charge during a special service in Awka on Sunday to mark the 2024 Fathers’ Day celebration in the Anglican church.

Ibezim, whose message centred on the theme of the year “Christian Fathers are living testimony of God’s glory”, was delivered by the Vicar of the church, Venerable Ekenedilichukwu Nwafor.

Ibezim thanked God for the gift of Fathers to humanity and described them as the glory of every home, without whose sacrifices and unwavering assistance to their wives, the home may not be a safe place to live in.

The archbishop noted that fathers were the image of God that carried  His glory and could only manifest God’s glory by fearing him and seeking to keep His commandments always.

Ibezim urged fathers to love their families by making a significant sacrifice for their salvation and well being and appreciated all Fathers in the Awka Anglican Diocese for their sacrifices towards the progress of the church.

He also advised fathers to ensure they raised godly family units that would translate to a safer society and a better Nigeria.

Dr Chukwudi Okoli, the Accountant General of Anambra State, commended the founders of the day, saying they created room for families to share special day with their fathers.

Okoli said that the celebration also gave room for closer bonding amongst the nuclear family members and quality relationships in the family.

Chief Tim Egboka, a former legislator in the Anambra State House of Assembly, explained that Father’s Sunday was a day designed to honour fathers whom God had bequeathed the responsibilities of moulding, guiding and providing for the family.

  • Don’t bite more than you can chew, Nigerians advise fathers

Don’t bite more than you can chew, Nigerians advise fathers
    Fathers
By Joan Odafe and Najibat Adebayo
Lagos, June 16, 2024 (NAN) Some Lagos residents have cautioned fathers against biting more than they can chew as they strive to meet the needs of their immediate and extended families in the face of economic challenges.
They gave the advice during separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
They said the plight of many men in the current economic situation was compounded by them succumbing to take more than they can handle.
Mr Seidu Momoh said even before the current not very pleasant economic situation in the nation, as a father, it had always been difficult providing for the family.
He acknowledged God had always helped him to meet most of his family’s needs are met.
He, however, said he had cut out luxuries and sourced for other streams of income to provide for his family.
Speaking on the impact of family pressure on fathers’ mental and physical health, Momoh said in spite of the harsh economy, many men engage in things they were not supposed to.
“I drive an SUV but I don’t take it out everyday because I know if I decide to fuel the car throughout the month, my house will suffer.
“So, that is why I drop my car and board bus like every other Nigerian. Before I used to enjoy myself; went to places; all those things have been cut out.
“I do things now in moderation and that is why I’ve been able to survive,” he said.
Mr Debo Adeshiyan, said men bore most of the financial burden in the home, including rent, school fees, feeding and taking care of extended family members.
He said the pressure of making ends meet had made many men fall into depression.
Adeshiyan urged the government to pay more attention to the welfare of the workers by offering a minimum wage that was commensurate with the costs of things in the market.
Mr Boma Joe-Jim urged fathers to be resilient to enable them cope with the challenges of the current realities.
“Now we’re hearing that a bag of beans is N250,000. Where will someone start?
“If, for instance, you used to buy one bag of rice now you have to share it because you want to get other things needed in the family,” he said.
He urged men to hold on to God and their beliefs to avoid being victims of pressure mounted on them by the society.
Speaking on the challenges fathers experience, Mrs Florence Eneonwuta, said she sympathized with them because many men could not withstand the level of pressure they have been exposed to in recent times.
She urged men, particularly fathers, to ask God for wisdom apply self-control when provoked by their family members. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Uwaleke tasks FG on more strategies against food inflation

    Food
    By Chinyere Joel-Nwokeoma
Lagos, June 16, 2024 (NAN) Prof. Uche Uwaleke, the President of Capital Market Academics of Nigeria, has advised the Federal Government to initiate more  strategies to tackle  rising food inflation.

Uwaleke gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

He  reacted to the May inflation figure.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s headline inflation rate increased to 33.95 per cent in May.

The NBS made  this known in its Consumer Price Index  and Inflation Report for May, which was released on Saturday.

The figure is 0.26 per cent points higher than the 33.69 per cent recorded in April.

The NBS  said  that on a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate in May 2024 was 11.54 per cent higher than that of May 2023 which was 22.41 per cent.

The report said the food inflation rate in May 2024 increased to 40.66 per cent on a year-on-year basis, which was 15.84 per cent higher than 24.82 per cent recorded in May 2023.

The NBS said that in May 2024, food inflation on a year-on-year basis was highest in Kogi, with 46.32 per cent, followed by  Ekiti with 44.94 per cent.

Uwaleke said that the Federal Government should devise more effective strategies to combat banditry and kidnapping to tackle  inflation.

He added that the government should hasten repair of  public refineries as well as scale up the number of compressed natural gas buses being introduced to ease  transport.

“I have always maintained that, to deal with the rising food inflation, the fiscal authority has a lot of roles to play.

“This is because the major causative factors such as insecurity in the food-belt regions, transport and logistics challenges,  as well as epileptic power supply and high cost of fuel, are all outside the control of the Central Bank of Nigeria,” he said.

Uwaleke said that Nigeria’s economy was being challenged by a cost-push inflation emanating from high transport and energy costs,  as well as insecurity, among other issues.

He said that  insecurity aggravated the situation through food supply shortages.

On the Kogi food inflation figure, Uwaleke attributed it to bad roads which, he said, made it difficult for farmers to convey food items from their farms.

“I understand the rural roads in Kogi are not in good condition; so, farmers have difficulty conveying food items from their farms. Insecurity is also a cause.

“Kogi (especially Lokoja) serves as a transit route for many travellers from the North to the South and vice versa, who normally stop over to eat and make purchases before proceeding on their journeys.

“This tends to push up prices of commodities in Kogi.

“Even in terms of headline inflation, Kogi has always recorded the highest except for last month when it was second highest after Bauchi,” Uwaleke said. (NAN)

  • Residents send SOS to LASG over poor drainage, flooding

A road in Oko filling situated around LASU-Isheri road flooded with water.

    Flood
    By Henry Oladele
Lagos, June 16, 2024 (NAN) Residents of Akowonjo in the Alimosho Local Government Area have lamented the poor drainage system and flooding in the area anytime it rains.
They called on the Lagos State Government (LASG) to save them from the consequences of the poor drainage system and flooding with the frequent rainfall in the state.
The residents spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews in Lagos.
They lamented that the road was always flooded whenever it rained, thereby causing havoc which was worrisome to both residents and road users.
A resident who lives around Vulcanizer, Akowonjo area of Lagos, Mr Kikachukwu Chukwuji, said the area was always flooded whenever there was a heavy rainfall.
Chukwuji said that the flood always affected every resident in the area, adding that movement was difficult during the rainy period.
“From my street to the bus stop is always a problem, it gets more uncomfortable if it is during the working days.
“We have resorted to buying rain boots to ply the road anytime there is a heavy rainfall because the drainage in this part of the area was not well constructed.
“Most times, whenever there is a heavy rainfall, the flood also causes traffic and not only that, some cars also get faulty due to flooding.
“Especially if it is a Monday, fares also become more expensive than the usual because commercial buses always take advantage of the situation,” he said.
He called on the government to find a lasting solution to the menace as the community was tired of the situation.
Another resident of the area, Mr Abdulrasheed Dauda, told NAN that the government should act fact by addressing the flooding affecting the vicinity.
“We cannot just experience any form of rainfall without flooding taking all over the road.
“We also understand that the drainage is also filled with waste that people indiscriminately throw into it thereby causing serious blockage that does not allow water to pass through.
“This is where we need the government to wade in by a form of prosecution or enforcement on anyone seen throwing waste into the drainage system,” he said.
Another resident of Alhaji Idowu community in Akowonjo, Mr Ismail Muftau, attributed the flooding in the area to block drainage.
Muftau said the blockage affects the flow of water when rain falls, adding that efforts to address the situation had been futile.
“Plastics and some particles have blocked the water channels and affected residents and shop owners from entering their house and shops,” he said.
He called on the government to help them in ensuring the drainage is free from blockage.
Temitope Ajayi, who lives around the LASU-Isheri road, told NAN that during the rains, the situation is worsened as floods take over the community.
Ajayi said water from the drainage in this area can cause an outbreak of disease.
“We are at the mercy of mosquitoes. When they constructed this road, nothing like this happened, but look at our road now, everywhere is flooded.
“When it rains, we are in big trouble.
Due to the flooding problem, residents have difficulty accessing their houses and shops,” she said.
A resident, Ayodeji Atanda, who also resides around LASU-Isheri road, lamented in the way the area was always flooded whenever there was a rainfall.
He said that immediately after Odo Eran towards Alimosho General Hospital, a section of the road is always flooded whenever it rained.
“We call on the government to find a lasting solution to that area as that particular place has always been like that in a long time.
“It is always worrisome whenever rain falls, it affects everybody which is not also good for the health.
“The flood is mixed with all sort of things and anyone with a wound walking in it can get an inflection,” he said.
NAN reports that areas like Gowon Estate, Water Street in the Paco area, Ipaja and some other communities around Alimosho are not left out in the flood. (NAN)
