  • ALGON seeks 4-year tenure for LG officials

    Tenure

    By Sunday John

Lafia, June 17, 2024 (NAN) The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), has called for the adoption of a unified four-year  tenure for elected local government officials in the country.

Alhaji Aminu Muazu-Maifata, its National President, made the call in an interview with  newsmen on Monday in Lafia.

Muazu-Maifata said that the move would ensure good governance and quality representation at the grassroots levels.

The president called on the National Assembly to urgently amend the nation’s  constitution to unify the tenure of local government officials  across the country.

“The tenure of local government officials should be four years to enable us deliver on our campaign promises to the electorate.

”It is unfortunate that the tenure of local government officials in some states is even one or two years.

”So, I wonder how these officials will deliver good governance within such a short period,” he fumed.

On the N62,000 minimum wage proposed by the Federal Government, the ALGON boss called on the federal government to increase the monthly allocations of the 774 local government areas in the country.

He maintained that the move would enable the councils pay the new minimum wage when it finally becomes a law.

Muazu-Maifata, who is the Chairman of Lafia Local Government Council in Nasarawa Sate, however, lauded Gov. Abdullahi Sule for granting autonomy to councils in the state.

He called on other governors to emulate Sule toward the overall development of the country, particularly the grassroots.

On the security of Lafia, he explained that a partial curfew had been imposed to tackle the increasing rate of kidnaping and other crimes within the state capital.

“We restricted the movement of motorcycles to between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., and tricycles to between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m.

“This is because security reports indicate that criminal gangs are using these two means of transportation to perpetrate crimes,” he explained.

Muazu-Maifata, however, said that the security situation in Lafia had improved, adding that even better strategies were being adopted toward the safety of lives and property. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng).

Akamkpa (Cross River), June 17, 2024 (NAN) No fewer than 3,500 persons have been slated to benefit from a free five-day medical mission in Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River.

The medical mission is being sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) with aim of providing healthcare services to medically underserved rural communities in the region.

The Commission’s Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbudu, said that the medical mission, which had already taken place in eight states of the region, had seen to the treatment of over two million people in Niger Delta.

Represented by Dr Eme Inyangabia, Assistant Director, Education, Health and Social Services (EHSS), he said the mission was the flagship of the Commission, serving to endear NDDC to the medically needy communities.

“The medical mission is one of several health programmes of the Commission, targeted at changing the health situation and narrative of our people in the region.

“It is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) No. 3 which aspires to achieve Universal Health Coverage and ensure health and well-being for all,” he stated.

Similarly, the Executive Director, EHSS of the Commission, Dr George Uzonwanne, said they were looking at 12,000 to 15,000 data points as a particular patient may be treated on more than one ailment.

‘‘We are carrying out a one-week short term intervention free of charge to the people of Cross River State.

‘‘So, we are looking at between 12,000 to 15,000 data points.

‘‘Treatments will range from things like malaria to things as complex as having fibroid surgery or general surgery,’’ he said.

  • Why we visit cinemas in spite of hard times  – Enthusiasts

Why we visit cinemas in spite of hard times –  Enthusiasts

    Cinema

    By Esenvosa Izah

Lagos, June 17, 2024 (NAN) Some enthusiasts on Monday said they still seek entertainment in cinemas in spite of economic hardship and technological advancement that brought entertainment in their bedrooms and phones.

They said that satisfaction from cinemas were deep and worth the trouble of spending more and moving out of their homes.

The Lagos-based cinema enthusiasts spoke in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

A trader, Mr Stanley Okafor, told NAN at Ebony Life Place, a cinema on Victoria Island, that he regularly went to the cinemas to relax and remove attention from challenges of life.

‘’I find it so relaxing; to me, one can just spend a little more to enjoy oneself.

‘’It is also a quiet and entertaining place to be, ‘’ Okafor said.

A student, Mr Fola Jaiyesimi, said that experience at the cinema was immersive.

‘’The equipment is obviously better than what you have at home; the sound quality gives you that thrill, and it is more traditional, ‘’ he said.

A mother, who gave her name simply as Edwina, said that she visited cinemas regularly until the COVID-19 era.

She told NAN that since then, she visited the cinemas occasionally.

‘’I used to visit regularly before the COVID 19 era; after that, I decided to be coming with my children to watch children-appropriate movies, occasionally,” she said.

She said that entertainment at cinemas was deeper and more satisfying.

However, a hair stylist, Miss Tricia Moka, said that she preferred online movie streaming which, she said, enabled her to maintain privacy.

‘’ I do not see the reason I should spend some money to watch a movie that I can watch online, ‘’ she said.

A Supervisor at Ebony Life Place, Mr Austin Ihentuge, told NAN that many people still visited the cinema regardless of the harsh economic situation in the country.

‘’I still see a good number of people here; we have other streaming services such as Netflix and Prime Video, but many people still come for cinema.

‘’For a fact, some movies do not premiere on these streaming services; some are exclusively cinema movies and cannot be viewed elsewhere other than the cinemas for a period of time.

‘’That prompts people to visit the cinemas because, most of the time, they want to be the first to see these movies, ‘’ he said.

According to Ihentuge, the experience and satisfaction people get from cinemas are also reasons they prefer to visit the cinemas.

‘’At Ebony Life, one of the experiences people have is the blanket we give out for comfort. We also have reclining seats, which give relaxation, convenience and comfort.

‘’No matter how wide your television set at home is, it may not be as big as that of the cinema; watching movies at cinemas is a great experience for a lot of people,‘’ he said.

A Supervisor at IMAX, a cinema at Lekki, Mr Muoka Chibueze, told NAN that a large number of people visited IMAX.

Chibueze said: ‘’No matter how hard the economy gets, people will still visit the cinemas to reduce stress.

‘’They want to go somewhere they can have a different experience than watching movies online or on television,’’ he said.

Miss Deborah Ajayi, a Floor Supervisor at Silverbird Cinemas, also on Victoria Island, said that more people visited the facility during public holidays than other days.

Ajayi added that the number of people who visited the facility reduced generally after the COVID 19 pandemic. (NAN)

  • Butchers decry state of abattoir in Badagry

    Abattoir
    By Raji Rasak
Badagry (Lagos State), June 17, 2024 (NAN) Butchers in Badagry area of Lagos State on Monday decried lack of basic amenities within their abattoir.
Consequently, the butchers, under the aegis of Alapata Association of Agbalata Market, have called for urgent rehabilitation of the abattoir by Badagry Local Government Council and the state government.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the call was against the backdrop of the outbreak of Cholera in some parts of the state.
Chairman of the association, Mr Taofeek Mohammed, told NAN in Badagry that the maintenance of the over 40-year-old abattoir was being done by the butchers alone.
“We pay levies to use the abattoir but all the maintenance of the place is being borne by us.
“We are not seeing the benefits of the money they are collecting from us daily.
“Presently, the maintenance of the abattoir is getting beyond our capacity; the local government council and the state government should also assist us,” he said.
According to Mohammed, the abattoir lacks basic facilities, including toilets and bathrooms.
He said that several letters had been written to the local government chairman on the need for the basic amenities in the abattoir.
“Also, the office built in the 80s is too small to accommodate members,” he said.
The chairman urged the council boss to help in addressing all the challenges being faced by cow sellers in the area.
Secretary of the association, Mr Abiodun Adebayo, also urged the government to assist members with loan facilities.
Adebayo said that some members of the association had left the job for commercial transportation business due to the current economic hardship.
“Many of our members have left the job for commercial motorcycle driving, while others have become bus conductors because of the economic challenges in the country.
“The palliatives are not getting to our members; the only way is for the government to give us loans, with favourable conditions for repayment,” he said.
Vice-chairman of the association, Mr Babatunde Yahaya, also appealed to the council chairman to assist in clearing the bushes in the abattoir, saying that members were spending lots of money to tidy up the place. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
