Abuja, June 18, 2024(NAN) Amb. Hajiya Hadiza Umar, the founder of Hajiya Hadiza Foundation, has called on the government at all levels and the international community to intensify efforts to end the insurgency.

Umar said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.

  • Enugu residents turn to charcoal stove as kerosene price soars

Enugu residents turn to charcoal stove as kerosene price soars

    Charcoal

    By Maureen Ojinaka

Enugu, June 18, 2024(NAN) Some Enugu residents have jettison their kerosene stoves, opting for charcoal stoves instead due to high cost of kerosene which currently sells for between N1,350 and N1,600 per litre.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who conducted a market survey on charcoal on Tuesday in Enugu, observed that many people now prefer charcoal for cooking due to its affordable price.

A charcoal seller in Garki Market, Grace Umeh, said that although the price of charcoal had risen from N5, 000 to N8,000 per sack; the patronage had continued to soar.

Umeh said the increase in patronage was because an average family of five could use up to 20 litres of kerosene in a month for their cooking.

“So, the family spends over N20, 000 on kerosene in a month.

“On the other hand, a bag of charcoal will last for two months, no matter the pressure of use, for the same size of family,’’ she said.

Another seller at Mayor Market, Oby Okafor, said that most families were buying the commodity in large quantities due to the high cost of kerosene and other energy sources.

“We have continued to experience good and profitable business for some time now in this charcoal business,” Okafor said.

Mrs Christiana Ozor, a charcoal dealer at Achara Layout, said that due to increase in patronage, she now sells more than two bags a day.

Some buyers said that using the charcoal for cooking had saved them a lot of money.

Mr Gilbert Nnamdi, a father of four, said the new charcoal stove introduced to him by his friend had helped him to reduce the amount he spent on kerosene.

“With only N200 charcoal my wife can cook a pot of soup and a pot of rice for the family no matter the quantity of the food.

“This new charcoal stove does not take time to catching fire and does not bring out smoke while cooking with it,” he said.

Another charcoal user, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that she had been using charcoal since the increase in the price of kerosene.

“I stopped using kerosene when the price increased to N900 and because I am afraid of using cooking gas, I quickly opted for charcoal as a means of energy cooking source,” she said.

Food vendors are not left out in the rush for charcoal because they can no longer afford the prices of kerosene and cooking gas.

A restaurant owner, Ms Ijeoma Dim, explained that the high costs of kerosene and cooking gas had given charcoal a sudden prominence.

Mr Ofor Anyawu, added that charcoal sellers now made brisk business due to the price increase of other cooking energy sources.

Anyawu called on government to make all cooking energy sources affordable and available for the masses, especially in the face of economic challenge in the country.(NAN)

  • Food security: Veteran actor advises S/West Govs

Food security: Veteran actor advises S/West Govs
    Farmers
    By Adeyemi Adeleye
Lagos, June 18, 2024 (NAN) A Veteran Yoruba actor, Lere Paimo, popularly known as Eda Onile Ola, has urged South-West governors to collaborate and take measures to restraint killer herdsmen to ensure food security in the region.
Paimo, the Oyo State-born Nollywood actor and a National Awards holder, who made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos, spoke on the way out of the current socio-economic, inflation and food crisis in the country.
The octogenarian said that with adequate security, infrastructure, and motivation for farmers, the South-West has the capacity to feed its people and the entire nation.
“Let every South-West governor control activities of herders, who always clash with farmers. This has sent many away from their ancestral farms, and the attendant hunger is staring us in the face.
“The herders have brought a lot of losses to many farmers by making their cattle to feed on farms while some farmers have also lost their lives in the process. Many have left their farms over this.
“This is very bad. Each governor has the authority and power in their various states to ensure that herders are tamed for people to have confidence to go back to farm without fear of any loss.
“People are suffering and hungry because many people have deserted farms because of security. If we want food security like before, we need to do something in the direction.
“Let each governor in the region take it as a personal responsibility to ensure stiff penalties for any herder who leads his flock to feed on people’s farm,” Paimo said.
The actor advocated ranches for herders as part of efforts to turnaround current food crisis.
“We must take actions now to ensure security in the region especially for farmers to enhance food security.
“South-West has enough arable land to growth its food and also feed the entire nation.
“The herder-farmer clashes is creating a lot of fears for the farmers in the region and our leaders must take urgent action before it will be too late,” he said.
According to him, since cattle rearing remains personal business of individuals or groups of people, efforts should be made by the government to ensure farmers are not affected.
He said that the government must provide a place in each state or local government for herders to rear their animals. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
