    Lagos, June 27, 2024 (NAN) The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) says Nigeria’s reliance on imported vehicles puts pressure on  forex and hinders job creation and economic growth.

    The Director-General of NADDC, Mr Joseph Osanipin, made the assertion at a Nigerian Auto Industry Summit  on Thursday in Lagos.

    The summit was organised by the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA), in collaboration with the NADDC.

    It had the theme:  ”Developing Nigeria’s Economy through the Auto Industry”.

    Osanipin, quoting the National Bureau of Statistics Report, stated that, in 2023, the value of passenger car imports jumped to ₦1.47 trillion, indicating 224.67 per cent increase from  that of 2022.

    He urged  that the trend should change.

    “We must strive towards a future where Nigeria is not just a consumer, but also a producer of high-quality automobiles,  and this is in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President.

    “The good news is that we are already making strides.

    “Nigeria has a number of local assembly plants in operation, and  government is more than ever committed to seeing the industry thrive,” he said.

    He said that NADDC was dedicated to supporting the development of a vibrant domestic automotive industry and was working on several initiatives to achieve the goal.

    He listed the initiatives to include implementing the Nigerian Automotive Industrial Development Plan.

    According to him, the plan provides a roadmap for the industry’s growth, outlining strategies/incentives for attracting investment, developing local content, and creating jobs.

    He also said that the success of the Nigerian automotive industry hinged on collaboration.

    Osanipin said that the association was ready to work with stakeholders to ensure progress.

     

    “The future of the Nigerian automotive industry is bright.

    “The inauguration of the Implementation Committee of the 2023 National Automotive Industry Development Plan  and the adoption of locally-assembled Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicles by the Federal Government is proof of its desire to ensure the development of the sector.

    “Nigeria has the potential to become a vehicle manufacturing centre for the West and Central African region.

    “Let us use this summit as a springboard to propel the Nigerian automotive industry towards a brighter future,’’ he said.

    The Minister of Industry Trade and Investment, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, said that the automotive industry had the potential to be a cornerstone of economic recovery, offering numerous benefits including job creation, technology transfer, and development of ancillary industries.

    She said that the Federal Government was committed to creating an enabling environment for the automotive sector to thrive.

    She added that the government  had introduced several policies and initiatives aimed at supporting the industry.

    “With the right policies, investments and collaborative efforts, we can transform this sector into a significant driver of economic growth and development,” she said.

    Mr Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller-General, Nigeria Customs Service, said that proliferation of used cars in Nigeria was further weakening the naira and straining  local manufaturers.

    Adeniyi represented by Comptroller Mankini Daniyan of  the Port Terminal Multiservices Ltd. Command noted that used vehicles were often cheaper and more affordable than their brand new ones, and sometimes locally-assembled vehicles.

    “These abundant and affordable used vehicles dampens demand for new locally-assembled cars, and hinders growth in the domestic industry.

    “The service currently enforces an import prohibition on vehicles older than 15 years, as contained in Schedule 3 of the Common External Tariff, from entering Nigeria’s car markets as a way to reduce import of used cars.

    “This is tailored at further supporting and encouraging growth in the Nigerian automative industry,” he said.

    Earlier, the NAJA Chairman, Mr Mike Ochonma, called for adequate support for the automative industry to enhance  transformation of Nigeria into Africa’s automative manufacturing hub.

    According to Ochonma, the Nigeria Auto Industry Summit shall annually produce significant information that will help in the achievement of the goal.

    He said that the summit would strive to  help  automotive industry leaders to set development agenda aimed at driving relevant government policies toward sustainable development of the industry. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Abuja, June 27, 2024 (NAN) The AYuTe Africa Challenge in Nigeria, an enterprise programme, has awarded 40,000 dollars in grants to three young agric-tech innovators to use technology in improving farming methods and food production in Nigeria.
    Dr Lekan Tobe, Country Director, Heifer International, made this known at the  grand finale of the 2024 AYuTe Africa Challenge Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja.
    Tobe said that the initiative would encourage innovators to leverage technology to achieve transformation in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
    “Leveraging youth and technology presents an opportunity for the transformation of agriculture, ensuring food security, youth employment, and economic development.
    “It is technology that is helping us to close the yield gap, and create sustainable value chains, reduce post-harvest loss, and increase fertiliser, water and soil use efficiency.
    “It also helps smallholder farmers to be better organised and to build improved strength to engage with the market,” he said.
    According to him, the competition serves as a springboard for identifying and supporting outstanding young agritech innovators for visibility, growth and increased productivity for smallholder farmers.
    He added that through a regional competition, Heifer International awarded 1.5 million dollars annually to leading agritech innovators across Africa.
    Prof. Akeem Oyerinde, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Abuja, emphasised the role of youths in leveraging technology to transform agriculture system in the country.
    “We all need to rejuvenate agriculture to where it belongs.
    “Each and every one of you can key into any agricultural products and business by using the various technology.
    “A technology like the mobile phones can be used  to promote productivity and address some of the challenges affecting smallholder farmers in Nigeria,” he said.
    Also, Daniel Bature, Director, Technical Services, Nasarawa State Agricultural Development, urged youths to utilise technology and create innovations that would develop Nigeria’s agriculture sector.
    Femi Oluwagbemi, Special Adviser to the Minister of Labour and Employment, said that with agriculture, young people could easily get into the process of job creation, self employment and organise themselves into cooperatives.
    “By so doing, they will have the chances to access funding from programmes such as this,” he said.
    Manir Umar, Special Adviser to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security on Youth and Agricbussiness, said that collaboration with stakeholders would ensure the implementation of policies in Nigeria.
    “The government can create policies, but cannot be the implementers, so, we try to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure efforts like this are being strengthened
    “Youths are the drivers of agriculture revolution. So, the ministry is giving a lot of focus of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the beneficiaries include: Ruth Ede of Scratop Nigeria Ltd., who was awarded 20,000 dollars grants for her innovation in converting bio waste into nutrients-rich bio fertilisers.
    Akpem Shadrach of Vet Konect, a digital animal health company,  secured 12,000 dollars for his innovation in providing comprehensive care for livestock farmers across Africa via mobile devices using AI tools to boost productivity.
    Also, Chinasu Stephanie -Meltus of Scarecrow Green Eden’s 4th industrial revolution, got 8,000 dollars for using technology in combating climate change effects and increasing farming efficiency for smallholder farmers.
    Ede, the highest beneficiary, told NAN that she would use the 20,000 dollars grant to improve access to nutrients-rich biofertiliser for farmers to boost their production. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Abuja, June 27, 2024(NAN)The Arewa Community in Southern Nigeria has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the Kano royal tussle to save the traditional institution from further ridicule.

    The Chairman of the community, Alhaji Musa Saidu, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

    He alleged that the entire crisis was orchestrated by politicians for their selfish end, not minding the collosal damage to the revered Kano Emirate.

    He added that the crisis would in no way benefit the collective interest of the generality of the people of Kano State, or will it add any value to the traditional institution.

    “Kano is a political nerve of the country and President Tinubu needs the state for his second term in 2027, as such should not allow the current royal tussle to degenerate.”

    Saidu said that the impasse over the Kano Emirate stool was a huge embarrassment to not only the state but the country as a whole.

    “It is a huge disrespect to law and order as well as the traditional institution.

    “ The frequent dethronement of emirs in the North by politicians within the last three decade is a symptom of collapse of our cultural and traditional society,’’ he said.

    The Arewa leader said that President Tinubu’s silence on the matter was “worrisome and wrong”.

    “ If former president Buhari, in spite of his controversies, could set up a committee to mediate and reconcile Emir Sanusi and former Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2020, why can’t Tinubu do the same,’’ he said.

    Saidu advised both Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and Muhammadu Sanusi II to consider the damage the impasse had made on the traditional institution they represent.

    He reminded them to take heed to the general belief that power comes from God, who bestows it on whom He wishes.

    “Allah gives power to whoever He wishes and takes it whenever He wants, so let’s accept destiny in our lives,’’ he said.

    He appealed to politicians to stop disuniting the people for their selfish interest.

    Meanwhile, Saidu has supported ongoing investigation process of former Kaduna State governor, Nasiru el-Rufai.

    “We support the investigation of el-rufai government, we support EFCC intervention as well,’’ he added.

    He described the action of Kaduna State House of Assembly as worthy of emulation by other lawmakers, adding that democracy cannot flourish under state of corruption.

    “El-rufai is an advocate of transparency in governance, today is his turn to prove his innocence or otherwise.

    “ Don’t go to court, go and appear before the investigation committee and defend yourself,’’  Saidu advised elrufai. (NAN)

    Ado-Ekiti, June 27, 2024 (NAN) Two brothers, Love Adesigbin, 13, and Heritage Adesigbin, 16 , along with one Michael Agboola, 19, were on Thursday, arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, charged with breaking into a shop and stealing.

    The defendants, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a three-count charge of breaking-in, stealing and receiving stolen property.

    However, when the charges were read to the defendants respectively,  each pleaded not guilty.

    The Prosecutor, Insp Akinwale Oriyomi told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Feb. 5  at  7:30 p.m. in Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the first defendant broke into the shop of one Rabiu Kudirat and stole a Samsung Galaxy AO4S phone valued at N250,000 and cash sum of N110,000.

    Oriyomi said that the second defendant on Feb. 6, at 9:00 a.m. collected the stolen Samsung Galaxy phone from his brother and on March 10 at 9:00 p.m. transferred the stolen Samsung Galaxy phone to Michael Agboola.

    According to him, the offences contravened Sections 324(1) and (2), 302(1)(a) and 343(2)(a) and (b) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

    The prosecutor asked the court for adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.

    Counsel to the defendants, Mr Gboyega Abiola, urged the court to grant his clients bail, and  promised that they would not jump bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Olarewaju Owoleso, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100,000 each, and one surety each in like sum.

    He adjourned the case till Aug. 5, for hearing.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

     Abuja, June 27, 2024 (NAN) Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, outgoing Vice Chancellor University of Abuja, has urged students of the Sultan Maccido Institute for Peace, Leadership and Development Studies, University of Abuja to practice peace-building.

    Na’Allah, who advised the students at a pre-graduation dinner and award ceremony in Abuja, also urged them to uphold the ethics of conflict resolution in their various professions.

    The vice chancellor, who was represented by the Director of the institute, Prof. Mutiullah Olasupo, highlighted the importance of participating in peace-building processes in the society.

    He said the institute would continue to strengthen its manpower base through training of employees, research, and advocacy.

    “We celebrate your milestone achievements; you have worked hard and persevered to reach this point, and now it is time for you to spread your wings and soar high in pursuit of your dreams.

    “I wish you success as you venture into the real world and take on new challenges and opportunities.

    “Throughout the year of your course work, we have shared so many experiences. From the challenging exams and late-night study sessions to the laughter-filled events and heartfelt discussions, each moment has shaped the person you are today.

    “I hope you have learned not only courses of your study but also valuable life lessons about teamwork, resilience, conflict resolution, astute leadership, and the power of curiosity.

    “I wish you all the best in your future endeavours, and may you continue to impact the world,” he said.

    A lecturer at the institute, retired Maj.-Gen. Bola Koleoso, emphasised the need for the students to embrace the spirit of discipline and be good ambassadors of the institute wherever they found themselves.

    He urged them to regulate their behaviours so that they do not make a negative impact on society, saying: “You must be aware of who you are and the impact you are having on others.’’

    He urged them to learn intelligent skills to enable them to interact positively with people for the benefit of mankind.

    A student of Criminology and Security Students, Mr Isaac Ogbaji, who is also the Chairman of the event’s Planning Committee, said the institute offered him the opportunity to learn about the security challenges in the country.

    “I have finished my project and submitted it as expected. Right now I am waiting for my certificate.

    “I feel so delighted to be here. Mahatma Gandhi once said that wisdom comes with so much pain. I have gone through so much pain here.

    “As I look forward to the next phase of my life, I am better than I used to be because my wisdom, understanding, and enlightenment have increased.

    “I have increased in all areas of my life because I am a student of Sultan Maccido Institute for Peace, Leadership and Development Studies,’’ he said.

    Ogbaji praised the institute for the quality of training it offers, saying: “The institute is well-arranged, well-programmed. The teaching and learning experience is well-structured and I got more than I expected.

    “With all that I have learned from the institute, I am prepared to attack and deal with challenges that affect the world and Nigeria in particular,” Ogbaji said.

    One of the Award recipients, Dr Khadija Abdulrahman, who commended the Institute for finding her worthy, urged all Nigerians to place the unity, peace, and development of the country above all other interests.

    “We should love the country ahead of thinking of ourselves.

    “We should be encouraged that in our oneness is where our greatness lies as a country and our strength as Nigeria lies together in our unity.

    “For the students, we have shown exemplary attitudes and leadership to them and I think we have equipped them enough to face the challenges in Nigeria.

    Lagos, June 27, 2024 (NAN) Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr Ibrahim Layode, has called on the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to meet with stakeholders to find solutions to pilgrims’ challenges.

     

    Layode made the call during a press conference  in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, according to a statement by an Assistant Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Welfare Pilgrims Board, Mr Taofeek Lawal.

     

    The commissioner said that most of the challenges encountered during 2024 Hajj were from  inadequacies of the commission.

    He said that the South West  was not pleased with food service at Mina as well as accommodation provided in Makkah.

     

    “We had a lot of challenges, and most of them are from NAHCON.

    “The caterer selected to provide meals for the state’s pilgrims was using his own discretion to select menu that was not favourable to the people of the South West.

     

    “Pilgrims almost protested at Mina, and many of them rejected the meals served and chose to go and buy food from vendors.

    “Even the accommodation provided for Lagos pilgrims in Makkah was not up to standards,” he said.

    The official said that NAHCON admitted that there were challenges during the Hajj.

    He, however, said that in spite of the challenges, ‘you can’t throw away the baby with the bath water’.

     

    The commissioner  called on stakeholders to join hands with NAHCON to address the challenges  ahead of 2025 Hajj.

     

    He thanked pilgrims from Lagos State for patience and praised  the state  Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu,  and his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, for huge support.

    He said that the state government provided the shortfall of the Basic Travel Allowance to the pilgrims and offset the cost of rams, amongst other kind gestures.

     

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 926 of 1,869 Muslim pilgrims from Lagos State  have so far returned from the 2024 Hajj. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Oyo NAWOJ sensitises market food vendors on cholera

    Ibadan, June 27, 2024 (NAN) The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Oyo State Chapter, on Thursday visited some food markets in Ibadan to sensitise vendors on Cholera and how to prevent its spread.

    NAWOJ Chairperson in the state, Omolola Alamu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the association needed to collaborate with the state government to check the outbreak.

    “NAWOJ is campaigning against the spread of cholera because we don’t want the people of Oyo State to contract cholera and, thereby, spread it in the state,” she said

    Alamu said the association went around to educate food vendors on the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene.

    “We need a clean environment; we must ensure that food cooked for public consumption is done in a good environment and with clean water,” she said.

    According to the chairperson, proactive steps are needed to ensure Ibadan residents are aware of cholera, going by the town’s proximity to Lagos, a state with high records of victims.

    “There’s a need for urgent and proactive steps to ensure that everyone is aware of cholera; knowing what to do and what not to do.

    “We picked food markets because many of the citizens buy cooked food to eat daily, and this is one of the fastest ways to contract cholera.

    “We are educating food vendors to ensure that what they are selling is made with clean water and in a healthy environment,” she said.

    Meanwhile, Dupe Fehintola, Chairperson, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) Chapel, said it was pivotal to educate the public on preventive measures against cholera.

    According to her, “Prevention is better than cure.”

    Fehintola said she was surprised that some of the market men and women were not aware of the cholera outbreak in the nation.

    “We met people eating under unhygienic conditions, but we educated them.

    “We saw children picking things on the ground, but parents are ignorant that at this period in time, one needs to be very careful.

    “We, however, encouraged the children to constantly wash their hands with soap and water after playing around,” she said.

    She added that at the Okirika market, two women said they had taken it upon themselves for a while now to educate their colleagues on the importance of proper hygiene.

    “The market men and women are now getting more informed about cholera as we furnished them with more information in a one-on-one talk,” she said.

  • TAF Africa encourages participation of PWDs in elections

    Asaba, June 27, 2024 (NAN) Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Delta have been encouraged to take advantage of relevant laws and provisions that guarantee their active participation in electoral processes.

    Mr Adeolu Kilanko, Programme Lead, TAF Africa, formerly known as the Albino Foundation, gave the charge in Asaba on Thursday at the commencement of a two-day training for PWDs.

    Kilanko said the training was convened to ensure PWDs participate actively in the forthcoming local government election in Delta.

    “As you are aware, the local government election in the state will be coming up on July 13, but we realised for persons with disabilities to be active members of the society, we need to carry them along.

    “That is the reason we convened this meeting. We are here to sensitise them through our ‘ABLE2VOTE’ campaign,” he said.

    Kilanko recalled that before the 2023 general elections, there was no data on PWDs as solicited by the organisation.

    ”We were able to get the data in the different areas of the country and this enabled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make little provisions for them.

    ”We saw a great improvement from what it was in the 2019 general election and we are hoping to build on that ahead of the upcoming local government election in Delta.

    “We want to see how we can work with the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) to ensure persons with disabilities are carried along,” he said.

    Kilanko disclosed that the training would also capture DSIEC, political parties and security agencies among others as stakeholders.

    According to him, participants will be exposed to what the constitution has provided for and other relevant laws to ensure PWDs fit well into all electoral processes.

    Kilanko assured that the organisation would continue to work with political parties at the national level to ensure that a particular quota was given to PWDs in the country.

    He disclosed that the training was being supported by Disability Rights Fund, describing the fund as a major supporter of the project.

    Meanwhile, TAF Africa, Corporate Service and Compliance Manager, Mr Uche Enyiocha, said the organisation focused on promoting the rights, recognition, well-being and support of individuals with disabilities.

    “Our mission is to work with state and non-state actors and dignitaries, including persons with disabilities by fostering inclusiveness and empowerment through policy and legislative interventions education.

    “Our organisation has been able to identify with political participation of persons with disabilities as a critical act of the effort towards their inclusion in our society.

    “We have taken up this endeavour to see how we can get them to participate in the electoral process,” he said.

    Enyiocha noted there had been great voter apathy within the communities, attributing it to neglect by the management of different electoral bodies at different levels and at different elections.

    The South-South Coordinator of the Association of Blind Persons, Mr Nkem Ofili, identified discrimination and lack of access to election materials among others as challenges faced by PWDs in the country.

    He appealed to governments at all levels to make necessary provisions that would enable PWDs to participate fully in electoral processes. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Abuja, June 27, 2024 (NAN) The out-going Vice-Chancellor of University of Abuja, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah says the repositioned institution can serve as catalyst for Nigeria’s greatness and development.
    Na’Allah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja at the sidelines of an award ceremony organised by the University’s Sustainable Development Centre (SDC) in honour of him as the “Best Performed” Vice Chancellor of the institution.
    The VC who is set to bow out from office in a few days, after five years of impactful tenure said that the institution has been transformed in line with international best practices, to address some of the nation’s problems.
    He said the introduction of strategic courses/centres such as the SDC, leadership Centre, Security Centre, aeronautical engineering, nuclear engineering among others has positioned the university as a catalyst to fast track the nation’s development.
    “The Sustainable Development Centre (SDC) is one of our great centres established to respond to the need of our world.
    “Sustainable development is at the centre of the strategy of the UN to save our world from calamity, so at University of Abuja we have put together this centre as a solution centre for Nigeria and the world.
    “This is a centre that was established to look for solutions in every area of the SDG goals, so our PhD and masters students focus on finding solutions to our world,” he said.
    Na’Allah thanked the Centre and the out-going PhD students for honouring him, while charging them to continue to contribute to the development of the country, with the knowledge gained from the institution.
    Earlier, Sen. Gbenga Daniel, Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, who was the special guest of honor, said he was delighted to be associated with the transformative leadership of Na’Allah at the institution.
    He stressed the need to always celebrate excellence, adding that that the SDC could go a long way in preferring solutions to the nation’s current challenges.
    Prof. Sule Magaji, Director, SDC in his remarks said the centre was out to champion holistic sustainable development and inspire students for a better tomorrow.
    Magaji emphasised the need for all hands to be on deck to achieve the SDG goals and evolve a better society.
    Also speaking, Brig- Gen. Adewale Adekoya, Acting Director of the Nigeria Army Heritage and Future Centre expressed optimism that the SDC will give the necessary push in Nigeria achieving the SDGs.
    Adekoya who is an out-going PhD student of the SDC, said the Centre thrives on impacting applicable contemporary studies that will help achieve the SDGs and develop the nation.
