    Abuja, June 2, 2024 (NAN) Sustainable Environment and Fisheries Foundation (SEFFA), an NGO, says it has empowered communities in Jos and environs for environmental sustainability.

    Mrs Ololade Adegoke, Chief Executive Officer, SEFFA, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

    She said that SEFFA, a Jos-based NGO, is dedicated to promoting sustainable agricultural practices and environmental protection as well as empowering young girls in the fight against climate change.

    “Since its inception in 2008, SEFFA has been a pivotal force in empowering communities, especially women, to improve their livelihoods and contribute to environmental sustainability

    “The organisation continues to complement the efforts of government and development partners in promoting climate-friendly actions and ensuring a sustainable environment for humans, livestock, and plants.’’

    According to her, the foundation welcomes partnerships with development organisations and government bodies to further their mission of advocacies, actions and sustainable practices.

    The chief executive officer emphasised the importance of raising awareness about climate-smart agriculture and sustainable practices.

    According to her, by providing education and resources, SEFFA aims to create a new generation of “climate smart ambassadors” who can drive change in their communities.

    “By educating young girls about climate change and its impacts, we prepare them to ask the right questions and take meaningful actions to address these challenges.’’

    She said SEFFA recently conducted a three-day training programme from May 16 to May 19 in Jos with the theme “Building Life Resilience for Climate Change in Jos, Plateau.’’

    Adegoke said that the young girls who participated in the training would not only serve as ambassadors but also become influential voices for change in their communities and beyond.

    “The involvement of future leaders in climate advocacy is crucial.’’

    She said that SEFFA also recently concluded a programme in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme/ Adaptation Fund Climate Innovation Accelerator (AFCIA).

    Adegoke said that the collaboration brought together 48 young girls from selected secondary schools and communities in Jos South and Jos North Local Government Areas.

    “During the training, participants engaged in sessions such as: Introduction to Climate Change and Climate-Smart Agriculture Practices, Financial Literacy for Young Farmers Building Synergy through Cooperatives and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene(WASH).

    “Others are General Hygiene Practices for Girls and the Introduction to Solar Charging Point Business.

    “SEFFA has a series of climate-smart activities planned for July, which will expand their outreach to more communities,” she said.

    On his part, Newton Akpona, acting Chairman of the National Sector Skills Council for Agriculture and Agri-processing, highlighted the significance of creating awareness among young farmers.

    He said that fostering a positive mindset and adopting climate-smart practices were essential steps in mitigating the effects of climate disasters.

    NAN recalls that on May 14, 2024 SEFFA also distributed farm inputs to communities in Gurapwana, Dahwol-Bob, and Vom in Jos South Local Government Area.

    SEFFA is collaborating with the Federal College of Veterinary Research and Medical Laboratory Technology, Vom, to build a greenhouse facility and to support individuals, families, and societies in adopting smart agricultural practices. (NAN) (www.nananews.ng)

  • Kebbi re-introduces monthly sanitation to prevent diseases – Gov. Idris

    Birnin Kebbi, June 1, 2024 (NAN) Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi, says the re-introduction of monthly sanitation is a measure to prevent diseases, ensure safe and clean environment in the state.
    Idris disclosed this in Birnin Kebbi on Saturday while flagging-off the re-introduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
    ”Clean environment and clean drinking water are highly necessary to the well-being of people to reduce both airborne and waterborne diseases.
    ”My administration will maintain the enviable health position of Kebbi, to always ensure that our people are healthy and productive members of the society,” he said.
    Idris, represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Umar Abubakar-Tafida, cautioned the people not to expose themselves to dangers and hazards through dirtiness and unclean surroundings.
    ”Illnesses are preventable if communities keep clean environment and drink clean water,” the governor said.
    Earlier, the State Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Musa Tungulawa, said the governor had mandated his ministry to pursue the environmental sanitation campaign and awareness to achieve healthy environment.
    “On the last Saturday of every month, the exercise will be strictly carried out in the state capital, Birnin Kebbi, and in all the local government areas of the state,” he announced.
    Tungulawa said that the governor had attached prominence to environmental matters and attainment of absolute hygiene among the citizenry.
    Also speaking, the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu-Bashar, commended the  the governor for his practical action to secure clean environment in the state.
    He tasked the people to remain loyal and prayerful for the success of the administration.
    “Loyalty to leaders galvanises them to action, while good governance energises people to attain better life.
    ”Some states and emirates elsewhere are undergoing trying periods.
    ”Kebbi state is in tranquility and secured, therefore, let us continue to live in peace with one another,” the emir urged. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Emir of Daura lauds NYSC for promoting national unity

    Daura (Katsina State), June 1, 2024 (NAN) The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Faruq-Umar, has etolled the commitment of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) for promoting national unity.

     

    The emir made the commendation in Daura on Saturday during an environmental sanitation exercise embarked upon nationwide by the NYSC.

     

    Represented by the Bebejin Daura Alhaji Abba Yahaya-Baure, the emir said NYSC remained the most noble scheme ever created in the country because it sustains the nation’s unity.

     

    He, therefore, assured the emirate council’s commitment to continue to collaborate with the NYSC for the development of the state and the country in general.

     

    He also commended the Director-General (D-G) of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Y.D Ahmed for initiating the nationwide environmental sanitation exercise.

     

    Faruq-Umar recalled, “There was a time when some people were advocating the scheme to be scrapped, I told them that they didn’t know what they were talking about.

     

    “Therefore, I urge you to take this chance seriously. You may not understand what I’m talking about, until you are through with the service.

     

    “So, Nigeria is here today to clean Daura, I said this because when you talk of NYSC, you are talking about Nigeria.” .

     

    Faruq-Umar expressed happiness that as part of the NYSC’s gesture, they were at his Palace to commence the exercise aimed at motivating the people of Daura in getting a clean and healthy society.

     

    “On the other hand, you are supporting us to be productive, because when you have a healthy society, they will be able to be productive, and the economy of the nation will improve,” he said.

     

    Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, Hajiya Aisha Mohammed,  said the exercise was initiated by the scheme’s director-general to raise awareness on the need for environmental sanitation.

     

    According to the coordinator, the decision for initiating the exercise was also based on the report of the scheme’s recent medical outreach nationwide.

     

    She explained that during the medical outreach, most of the people were treated for diseases related to poor hygiene and sanitation.

     

    Mohammed said that the scheme deemed it fit to embark on the awareness campaign so as to have a very clean environment..

     

    The NYSC coordinator pointed out that choosing Daura for the inauguration of the exercise was based on its positive disposition due to the support they have been receiving.

     

    She described the emirate and the entire people of Daura as ‘NYSC and youths friendly’. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
