  • Tackling insecurity in FCT communities to boost food production

Tackling insecurity in FCT communities to boost food production

By Veronica Dariya, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has experienced a surge in cases of kidnappings, banditry and killings in the last two years, with the figures scaling up between December 2023 and February 2024.

Worst hit was Bwari Area Council where many were abducted around communities sharing borders with Kaduna, Niger and Nasarawa states.

Specifically, the gunmen hit Tudun-Fulani Gaba, Kawu, Bmuko, Zuma, Guita, Chikakori in Kubwa, and Garam, near Niger among many others, where people taken.

One notable aspect of these communities is that the inhabitants are farmers Bwari and whose activities have earned Bwari the popular tag of the food basket of the FCT.

They produce mostly yam, grains such as maize, sorghum, vegetables, among others.

But with bandits constantly laying ambush and grabbing farmers in the farms, the farms are getting deserted, throwing up the fears of food shortages in the federal capital.

Investigation has also revealed that fear-stricken rural dwellers are migrating to the city centre in droves.

Mr Akuso Philip, a farmer, says the insecurity is disheartening and an unfortunate situation.

Philip regretted that government’s campaign for food sufficiency is being frustrated by the steady attacks on the farmers.

Philip, who resides in Baran-goni community in Bwari, says that if the security situation is not well tackled, food scarcity will set in.

“Most farmers in these communities have bigger farms in the remote areas where the lands are more fertile but, unfortunately, those areas are considered unsafe because of these criminals.

“Even the indigenous people in some of these communities have resolved to maintain only the farmlands close to their homes due to the fear of being attacked.

“This challenge may lead to farmers cultivating small portions of lands beside their homes, just for direct consumption, which is not good for commercial farmers.

“If the insecurity is not critically addressed, this can lead to food insufficiency or shortage and will definitely make food expensive for the common man to afford, like it has already begun.

“At some point, it may even drive away business opportunities and other entrepreneurs or organisations that may intend to bring development to the district or who are already on ground,’’ he says.

Philip, however, suggested that an increase in the security apparatus in the area could help salvage the situation.

He said that a robust presence of a joint task force in all nooks and cranny of the district, especially in the hinterlands, would go a long way to allay the fear of residents.

Following the outcry, the Minister of FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, who visited the district after series of attacks in February, assured residents of government’s commitment to tackle insecurity.

The minister, who ordered the deployment of a large number security personnel to the district, said it had become necessary, based on intelligence reports from security agencies.

This, he stated, was to ensure the safety of residents, including private and public institutions located in the area, as the issue of security was a priority of the President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Wike, while appearing before the Senate Committees on FCT and Area Councils to defend the N1.1 trillion budget of the FCTA for the 2024 fiscal year, requested the Senate to approve a security vote for the territory.

This, he explained, was to address the security challenges.

Wike said that there was a significant step towards bolstering security in the nation’s capital with the distribution of 100 motorcycles to security outfits and the six area councils in the territory.

The minister, at the handover ceremony of the vehicles, urged the recipients to utilise the vehicles effectively, to combat crime, particularly in rural areas, where people were vulnerable due to the remote terrains.

Each of the six area councils received 10 motorcycles allocated to their respective vigilante outfits.

The police got 30 motorcycles, while the State Security Services and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), received five each.

Wike said the distribution of the motorcycles was with the hope that the different outfits would use them to enhance security in the nation’s capital.

He said that series of engagements with the FCT Area Councils were essential in combating the insecurity.

The minister said the engagements were in collaboration with the FCT Police, which led to the arrest of notorious kidnappers, who were terrorising the nation’s capital.

He added that President Tinubu had directed series of security town hall meetings with the area councils, to enable the administration to get the cooperation of residents in the fight against insecurity.

He urged residents to provide timely intelligence reports that could help to nip the challenge in the bud.

Meanwhile, Mr John Awoyi, President, Bwari Youth Forum, hss said that there had been relative calmness in the area council since February.

“We have witnessed the presence of the joint task force in the council recently, easing the situation we have struggled with, since 2022.

“We have enjoyed peace for some time now. Bwari became a centre for insurgency towards the latter part of 2023, but this administration has stepped up to tackle it.

“I am privileged to attend most of the security meetings here in Bwari, alongside other stakeholders, so I can confidently ascertain that progress has been made and a lot achieved.

“President Tinubu, the Minister and all the Defence Joint Task Force, have done well so far in this council, I must say,” Awoyi said.

Similarly, Wike also promised improved security and more infrastructures to residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

He gave the assurance while briefing newsmen after a closed-door session with Senators at the National Assembly, in Abuja.

The senate had invited the minister and the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, to brief the lawmakers on modalities put in place to secure residents of the FCT.

The minister said the interaction was fruitful, adding that the senators had agreed that security had significantly improved in the FCT.

“I am glad they are all happy with what we have done, what we are going to be doing and they provided some suggestions on ways forward.

“What is important is what the FCT should expect from now. I will say improved security, more infrastructures. You can see what is going on in the FCT. It has been turned into a construction site.

“You can also see what has happened in the FCTA. Now we have our own Civil Service Commission; now we have our own Permanent Secretaries which has never been.

“There are new things in the FCT, and the residents are happy,” Wike said.

He noted that no society exists without one form of crime or the other, adding that what was critical was being able to limit or reduce the level of insecurity.

On the spate of kidnappings, the minister said: “Most of the kidnapping stories you hear, some of them are stage-managed by people. There are some internal arrangements.

“Take for example; you have a housekeeper or a driver in the house who will plot to kidnap the child of their boss. In such a case, what do you expect us to do?

“What we can do is to ensure that the person that is kidnapped is released.”

The minister said the two most wanted kidnappers terrorising residents of the FCT had been arrested, adding that the development had reduced the level of kidnappings in Abuja.

“We are not saying that we have gotten to where we want to be, but we are doing a lot and people should acknowledge that what used to be is not what we are seeing now.

“We will continue to do our best to ensure that we provide the best to our people.

“We cannot, however, give you the assurance that there will be no form of criminality; nobody can do that, as long as we are humans,” the minister said.

    Mining

    By David Adeoye

Makinde stated this on Friday, during a meeting with the chairmen in Ibadan.

He reminded them that security of the people remained one of their responsibilities that they should live up to.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor was represented at the meeting by the Chairman of the state Mineral Development Company, Mr Abiodun Oni.

He noted that the council chairmen should take responsibility for the challenges and opportunities in the mining sector in their respective areas.

Makinde emphasised the importance of harnessing the state’s mineral resources for the benefit of citizens.

He said that mining operations must not be allowed to have adverse effect on the security of lives and property in the state.

The governor noted that the mining sector was under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Federal Government.

  • Ekiti residents want FG to implement price control policy

Ekiti residents want FG to implement price control policy

    Policy

    By Adedeji Egbebi

Ido-Ekiti (Ekiti), June 6, 2024 (NAN) The residents of Ido-Ekiti on Thursday have appealed to the Federal Government to implement price control policy to reduce cost of food, drugs and essential commodities.

A cross section of residents of the community, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ido-Ekiti, said the cost of living in Nigeria had become unbearable.

One of the residents, Mr Bolaji Farouk, a tailor, said the hike in prices of raw materials was too expensive for an average Nigerian.

Farouk urged the federal government to engage relevant stakeholders, to regulate prices of food items and essential products.

According to him, many of the clothing materials, sowing machines are too expensive to afford by most of our members in Tailors Association.

“The high cost of food, drugs, essential commodities, raw materials needs to be address by the federal government.

“I pray that God will grant President Bola Tinubu wisdom to pilot the affairs of our dear country,” he said.

Also, Mrs Foluke Ajayi, a civil servant and resident of the community, appealed to President Tinubu to implement price control to ease the sufferings of Nigerians.

Ajayi explained that whenever the federal government increased the minimum wage, prices of food and essential goods would also increase.

He, therefore, appealed to Tinubu to focus on making cost of living comfortable for the citizens.

Similarly, a leader of the community, Chief Jacob Aina, said the price of food, which an average Nigerian needed to survive, was too expensive to buy in the market.

Aina explained that most of the people living within the community, were finding it difficult to eat three square meals a day, due to hike in prices of food.

He appealed to the federal government to initiate price control policy to curb inflation of goods, food and essential commodities in Nigeria.

Also, a resident, Mr Godwin Lawal, an automobile mechanic, said the cost of motor parts was exorbitant as most commercial and private users found them difficult to buy.

Lawal said that due to lack of price control policy, many dealers of motor parts, raw food, have increased the prices.

“I can decide to start selling motor parts and I will sell at any rate that suit me and nobody will query me.

“That is what most Nigerians are doing, some motor parts are not as expensive as they are, but because the current price of petrol has affected cost of transportation, the dealers are increasing the prices of their goods.

“But as soon as the federal government introduced price control policy, import duty, taxes will be reviewed and price of food, goods and essential commodities will be affordable for Nigerians,” he said.

Lawal prayed God grant President Bola Tinubu wisdom on how to make cost of essential needs affordable for the citizens.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Paying tithe shouldn’t be forced – Cleric

    Clergy
    Tithe
    By Anita Uzoagba
Abuja, June 5, 2024 (NAN) Mr Sampson Amoateng, the General Overseer, House of Miracles Ministries, has advised churches to follow scriptural practice of making tithe payment a freewill and not by force.

Amoateng, who made the call in a statement on Wednesday, explained that tithing was a biblical practice of giving a portion of one’s income to support religious institutions and the community.

According to him, tithe and offering is a scriptural practice that is meant to be freewill and not by force.

“The concept of tithe is rooted in the biblical teachings of the Old and New Testaments, as recorded in Deut. 14, Matt. 6 and Malachi 3:10.

“I am against pastors or churches forcing people to document their tithe cards, saying, ‘my money is mine.

“It is carnal to document tithe cards. Tithing is a spiritual discipline that requires faith, trust, and obedience,” he said.

Amoateng said tithing demonstrates our gratitude for God’s blessings and provision, and also express our trust in His ability to provide for our needs.

“Tithing has practical advantages; it helps to support the church and ministries, enabling the spread of the gospel and the care of the poor and needy,’’ he said.

Amoateng said that tithing fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility among believers, as they work together to support the work of the church.

He said that in recent times, people who do not go to church give money to people in need as their way of tithing, adding that, this was the way to go and not forced.

“Tithe is a vital aspect of religious practice that demonstrates our gratitude, obedience, and trust in God.

”It is a spiritual discipline that requires faith and commitment, but yields rich rewards in terms of spiritual growth and financial responsibility.

”As we consider our relationship with God and our role in supporting the church, may we embrace the practice of tithe with joy and generosity,” he said.

He said doing so, people would not only honor God but also contribute to the building of His kingdom on earth.

Amoateng who based in Accra, Ghana urged people to be committed to God’s work and abide by His teachings. (NAN) (wwwnannews.ng)

  • Ikorodu stakeholders want LASG to build 4th mainland bridge

Ikorodu stakeholders want LASG to build 4th mainland bridge

    Infrastructure

    By Adepote Arowojobe

Ikorodu (Lagos state), June 2, 2024 (NAN) Stakeholders in Ikorodu have urged Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to build the 4th Mainland bridge and work on other uncompleted roads before the expiration of his tenure.

The stakeholders, who disclosed this in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Ikorodu, Lagos State, said Ikorodu had infrastructural deficit.

“Ikorodu is lagging behind in terms of infrastructural development, we are not where we are supposed to be in terms of infrastructural development,” they said.

Prince Lanre Balogun, former Lagos State Commissioner for Rural Development, said that Gov. Sanwo-Olu, as a competent administrator, would deliver on his campaign promises to Ikorodu division as he did during his first term.

He urged the governor to build the 4th mainland bridge and other uncompleted roads before the expiration of his tenure.

“If you look at the budget of Lagos state in terms of infrastructure, you can now apportion them into division.

“How much do they give Ikeja, Epe, Lagos Island and so on, and check how much of budget is allocated to Ikorodu in terms of infrastructure.

“That is when you will know that we have a lot of infrastructural deficit.

“The 4th mainland bridge which he promised that he will deliver, as we speak, they have finished the paper work/master plan and secure partners,” Balogun said.

“The Isawo road is under construction but has not been completed, Igbogbo Baiyeku, Offin-Oreta road, all need attention.

“We urge the governor to call on the contractors to go back to site.

“Infrastructural development is for those living, anything given now is for those alive, I urge people in authority to take note and intervene immediately,” he said.

Also, Chief Kayode Olomo, Baale of Ojogbe area of Ikorodu, said that Sanwo-Olu started well with Ikorodu but he needed to do more.

“For example, he gave us two commissioners during his first term. But we want him to replace the commissioner he removed with an indigene.

“Gberigbe axis also needs the intervention of government,” he said.

On her part, Princes Adebukola Osho, the Iyaloja of Ikorodu central, said Gov. Sanwo-Olu has actually done well in his first term, adding that she believed he would do better this second term.

She urged residents and political leaders to mediate and probably lobby on areas that needed attention.

She added that this was necessary because the areas needing the attention of government must be identified to attract intervention.

“This is the first time we are having a parallel government in both the Local government, State and the Federal.

“Let us keep lobbying; we will enjoy more dividends of democracy in Sanwo-Olu’s government,” she said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Apo Resettlement residents decry poor state of link roads

    Infrastructure

    By Dorcas Jonah

Abuja, June 2, 2024 (NAN) Residents of Apo Resettlement Area in the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) have decried the poor state of link roads and other social amenities in the area.

The residents, in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, said they always pass through a lot of difficulties accessing their homes.

The residents further said that accessing critical facilities such as schools and hospitals was also a major challenge due to lack of link roads.

Elder Babayinka Ojo, a resident of Apo, said that all link roads leading to the markets and some estates have remained inaccessible by both motorists and pedestrians over the years.

”Our city roads are full of potholes some of which have become craters.

”These potholes are hazardous to motorists and pedestrians alike as they increase the risk of accidents, falls and possible injuries.

“Driving at night is incredibly challenging and unsafe because of the dreadful roads and dilapidated link roads.

“The alternative road that is supposed to connect Agaba Estate junction to Main Market to decongest the excess traffic leading to the market is not accessible to both motorists and pedestrians,” he said.

He said that some abandoned structures in the area have been occupied by criminals and drug addicts who pose serious danger to the residents.

”The Sen. Zephaniah Jisalo neighbourhood roads are an eyesore.

”The worst is a cashew plantation in the area called Agwa TV, which Indian hemp smokers have turned to a ‘no go area’ between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily,” he alleged.

Ojo said that the road linking Lokogoma, Apo Mechanic, Shoprite/burial ground was another death trap to motorists.

Another resident, Mrs Esther Ekong, appealed to the Minister of FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, to come to their aid by fixing the bad roads in the area.

Ekong urged the minister to use his office to assist the community by allocating funds for the construction of roads in the area.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
