Madrid, Oct. 23, 2017 (Reuters/NAN) Catalonia Deputy Prime Minister on Monday said the regional leader, Carles Puigdemont, would lose all powers and stop receiving salary once the Senate approved article 155 which imposed direct central government rule on the region.

Article 155 is the ‘Nuclear Option’ that can allow Spain to seize Catalonia.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya de-Santamaria said “a single representative may be temporarily instated by Madrid to govern the region after the Senate approves direct rule.

“The Senate is expected to approve the measures on Friday.”

In a relative development, Catalonia’s Foreign Affairs Spokesman Raul Romeva said European Union would lose credibility if it allowed Spain to impose direct rule on Catalonia.

Romeva told BBC radio, when asked how the Catalan regional government would prevent the Spanish Government from re-imposing direct rule that it was only the Catalan people who could
change the regional institutions.

“How can the European Union live with that situation if it appears?.

“How can they be credible if they allow this to happen? However, what I can tell you is that the people and the institutions in Catalonia would not let this happen,” he asked.

Spain Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy had on Saturday held an emergency cabinet meeting to decide what measures to take under the article 155 of the Spanish Constitution

That was a broad, forceful tool that has never before been used that could allow him to take full administrative control of independence-minded Catalonia. (Reuters/NAN)
