Abattoir
By Nabilu Balarabe
Jalingo, Jan. 18, 2017 (NAN) The National Union of Butchers, Taraba chapter, on Wednesday, appealed to the state government to complete the abandoned modern abattoir in Jalingo.
The Secretary of the union, Alhaji Abubakar Bala, told newsmen in Jalingo that the abattoir, if completed, would improve the working conditions of members.
He said the project was located at Wuro-sembe and had been abandoned since 2012 despite reaching about 80 per cent completion.
Bala added that “the abattoir will help us a lot because it is spacious and we will have
sufficient water, an advance waste management system and so on.
“We have paid a courtesy visit to Gov. Darius Ishaku and pleaded with him to complete the project but that did not happen.
“So, we are once again appealing to the governor to complete this project which is environmentally-friendly.”
The scribe said the union had membership strength of over 2,000 persons, handling various departments of its temporary abattoir located at Sabon-Gari.
Bala said veterinary officials had always been on duty at the temporary abattoir to
ensure that the over 150 cows slaughtered daily were in good health and safe for public consumption.
He warned members of the union against alleged slaughtering of animals outside the abattoir.
He added that “we will not tolerate the practice of slaughtering cows outside the abattoir because you cannot guarantee the health status of such animals.
“We insist that slaughtering should be done here where our doctors will
determine the health condition of the cows or whether they are rustled or not.” (NAN )
