Lagos, July 25, 2017 (NAN) A 31-year-old businessman, Louis Anyimigbo, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court over alleged stealing of N1.8 million belonging to his friend.
Anyimigbo, who lives at No. 9, Unity St., Ejigbo, Lagos, is facing a one-count charge of stealing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Donjor Perezi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 4 at No. 27, Akinremi St., Ikeja.
Perezi said the case was reported to the police by the complainant, one Mr Amechi Nwanjei.
“Anyimigbo collected the said amount from the complainant on the pretext of importing 15 fairly used car engines of different brands and one pick up van, all valued at N1.8 million from Greece.
“ The cars were to be cleared at Apapa wharf afterwards.
“The accused reneged on the agreement after collecting the money and refused to picks calls from the complainant,’’ the prosecutor said
“Whenever the accused picks the complainant’s call, he threatens his life on phone,’’ the prosecutor alleged.
He said that Anyimigbo absconded with the money, adding that the offence contravenes Sections 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Layinka, granted the defendant N 750, 000 bail, with two sureties in like sum.
Layinka ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The magistrate adjourned the case till Aug. 10. (NAN)
