Lagos, Aug. 9, 2017 (NAN) A businessman, Sunday Ogunyemito, who allegedly beat two policemen and his wife, was on Wednesday released on N200, 000 bail on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
The Magistrate, Mrs J.O. Awope, who gave the ruling, also asked the accused to produce two sureties as part of the bail condition.
She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The accused, 37, a resident of Abule-Egba, a Lagos suburb, is standing trial on charges of malicious damage and assault.
He, however, entered a `not-guilty’ plea.
She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
According to the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offences on Aug. 2 at Abule-Egba.
He said the accused beat his wife, Eniola, and two policewomen — Sgt. Bolanle Kayode and Sgt. Esther Aboche.
“The accused beat up his wife and injured her and the wife went to the police station to report.
“The two policewomen followed her to arrest the accused, but the accused descended on them while they were performing their lawful duty,’’ he told the court.
Ayorinde said the accused also destroyed one of the policemen’s beret and shoes valued at N10, 000.
“The accused, in the process, removed Aboche’s cap and shoes and destroyed them.”
The offences contravened Sections 174 and 350 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 174 stipulates three years imprisonment for assault.
The case was adjourned until Aug. 30 for mention. (NAN)
