Businessman appears in court for alleged unlawful possession of firearms

Lagos, June 28, 2017 (NAN) A 57-year-old businessman on Thursday, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for alleged unlawful possession of firearms.

Ailabogie Aikpaojie, of  Plot 21, Block 52, Bisola Durosimi Etti, Lekki, Lagos,  is standing trial for possessing a pistol, nine rounds of ammunition, a  pump action gun  and 250 pieces of cartridges.

However, the businessman pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The Prosecutor, Insp Edet Akadu, told the court that the accused  person committed the offences on June 21 at about 3:p.m. at Mushin Bus-Stop area of Lagos.

Akadu said the accused was suspected and stopped by the Area Commander ‘D’  Mushin, ACP Olasoji Akinbayo, with some policemen on patrol.

He said that when he was searched, a pistol No. TAD3860, 250 cartridges and a barrel pump action with serial No. P884479 were found on him.

The prosecutor said the accused was caught with the items in his Toyota Camry Saloon with Registration Number LSD 173 DR.

“When he was asked how he came about the items or what he intended to do with them, he could not give any satisfactory explanation”.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 330 and 298 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The Magistrate, Mr E.O. Ogunkanni, granted the accused bail in the sum of N300, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Ogunkanni said the surety must be gainfully employed and should also provide evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned to July 13 for mention. (NAN)
