Businessman appears in court for alleged car theft

Abuja, May 14, 2018 (NAN) The police, on Monday, arraigned a 40-year-old businessman, Umar Faruk, before an Upper Area Court, Gudu, FCT for allegedly stealing a Toyota Hilux, property of one Mr Chris Nyikwagh.

Faruk, a resident of Oyus GRA Suleja, Niger State, however, pleaded not guilty to the one -count charge of theft.

The judge, Mr  Bello Rufai, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500,000 and two sureties in like sum.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Insp Augustin Urom, had told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on April 12 2017.

Urom also  said that  the accused  stole  a wallet, clothes, ATM cards, four loaves of bread and other valuables; all valued at N10.5 million from the truck marked EM 60 SMK.

He also said that police investigations revealed that the accused had re-registered the truck on April 19, 2017 with the Directorate of Road Traffic Service Abuja (DRTS).

The offences contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

The defence counsel, Mr Uchenna Okafor, told the court that the offence was bail-able.

He, therefore, applied for the bail of his client on a liberal term

Having granted the bail request, the judge adjourned the case until July 18. (NAN)
