Bus conductor gets N50,000 bail over alleged N10,000 shop-lifted items

Lagos, Aug. 9, 2017 (NAN) An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday granted a 38-year-old bus conductor, Ikenna Albert, bail
in the sum of N50,000 for allegedly stealing items worth N10,000 from a shop.

The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbulu , granted the accused bail after he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Ekogbulu  also ordered that the accused should produce two sureties, who must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Albert of Atitebi Street, Ayobo, a Lagos suburb, is being tried for stealing.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offence on July 31 at Olayemi, Ayobo.

He alleged that the accused stole a DVD player and a phone valued at N10,000, property of the complainant, Mr Samson Adeyinka.

“The accused entered the complainant’s shop on the pretext of buying a baby soap.

“”As the complainant was attending to another customer, the accused quickly disconnected the DVD player from the socket and
put it in his bag.

“He also picked the complainant’s phone on the table and dropped it in his bag and told the complainant that he was coming back to buy the soap.

“But  the complainant was fast enough to discover that his phone was missing on his table,” he said.

Okuoimose said the complainant ran out immediately and raised alarm and the accused was apprehended by peopele.

He said when his bag was searched, the complainant’s phone and DVD player were found.

The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal  Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes a  three-year jail term for stealing.

The case was adjourned until Aug. 21 for mention. (NAN)
