Ikeja, Sept. 5, 2018 (NAN) A 58-year-old businessman, Rasheed Abiye, who allegedly duped an accommodation seekers of N61,000, was on Wednesday docked before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Abiye, a resident of Iju Area of Lagos, is being tried for obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, told the court that Abiye committed the offences sometime in April at No 8, Olowo St., Obawole Iju, Lagos.
Unah said the accused obtained N61, 000 from an accommodation seeker on the pretext of letting out an apartment to him in Iju.
He said that the complainant paid the money to the accused after he had inspected the room.
The complainant cleared the room and moved in, padlocked it and travelled.
“When he came back, he saw that the padlock had been broken and his property taken away, while the room was given out to another person.
“Jarh’s efforts to retrieve his money or have his accommodation proved unsuccessful.
“Abiye was arrested and handed over to the police,” he told the court.
The offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 prescribes 15 years jail term for obtaining money under false pretences.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, granted the accused N20, 000 bail with one surety in like sum.
Fashola said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until Sept.14 for mention. (NAN)
