Bauchi, May 31,2018 (NAN) Residents of Sabon Kaura Community in Bauchi metropolis have decried the persistent power outages in their area, as well as high electricity tariff from the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC), Bauchi Business unit .

Mr Umar Adamu, leader of the community, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Thursday that they felt shortchanged paying for what they did not consume.

The community leader said that the electricity supply in the community was extremely poor, adding that the erratic supply also attracted high tariff despite been supplied on “a-day-on and a-day-off basis”.

“Our electricity is rationed on a day-on and a day-off basis, but comes with high tariff.

“We had a meeting with the Jos Electricity Distribution Company sometimes ago and they told us our line was mistakenly connected to a wrong feeder, and that we would be reconnected to a better feeder like that of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU).

“However, the promise is yet to be fulfilled and we are still wallowing in darkness and paying heavily,” he said.

When contacted, Mr Abubakar Sa’ad, Acting Regional Manager of Jos Electricity Distribution Company, Bauchi Business unit, said he was not aware of any meeting or promise to reconnect the community to another feeder.

He added that the company was working tirelessly to improve the power supply of the community and the state at large.

“As a representative of this company in Bauchi, I am not aware  of a meeting between the community and JEDC.

“What we know is that they are on 33kV feeder, which is entirely different from a dedicated feeder of ATBU.

“ATBU has its own dedicated feeder and we do our best to provide adequate electricity supply to the institution because of the nature of the place and the way it responds in terms of settlement of bills.

“However, Sabon Kaura is on Nabordo feeder, which is a rural long distance feeder and as far as we are concerned, we cannot give them supply the way we are giving ATBU,” he said.

The manager explained that the company was trying its best to improve supply to the community, adding that plans had been mapped out. (NAN)
